In many instances, we recognize incivility in others but not in ourselves. Tolerating incremental increases in uncivil behaviors contributes to normalizing incivility and risks the hazard of bullying. Incivility impacts communication, voice, and may cause individuals to give way to the bystander effect. It is crucial to address uncivil behaviors to promote safe, civil work environments. Choosing civility involves establishing the social norms of civil behaviors and a workplace culture primed to break the cycle of incivility. Inclusiveness, psychological safety, and innovation are linked to relational civility. In a healthy work environment people connect and belong, have a sense of shared identity, learn and grow, contribute, and makes things better. Civility matters.
