Job Summary:
The Restoration Technician at Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) will assist in the Restoration Program as the field lead on multiple ecological restoration projects. This labor-intensive position performs land management activities, natural resource monitoring, data collection/ management and supports SSI’s mission, under the supervision and direction of SSI ecologists. The ideal candidate has experience or interest in California natural history and ecology, grassroots community engagement, and working with volunteers implementing ecological restoration activities.
Primary Roles and Responsibilities
- Vegetation Management: invasive plant management using hand and mechanized tools and herbicide, on occasion. Native plant establishment and maintenance, including planting, watering, monitoring, and care.
- Volunteer engagement lead: work with SSI ecologist and outreach coordinator to promote and lead restoration field work volunteer events.
- Natural resource monitoring: vegetation, wildlife, restoration site, etc. as needed for each Project.
- General Project Support: planning, shopping, purchasing, and various other project support needs.
- Other ecological restoration and related activities
Hours: 20-25/week average, with workload being higher in some weeks and lower in others (flexible schedule required). Note this is a 6-month position, with longer-term employment contingent on performance and continued funding.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Must have a valid state driver’s license, access to personal vehicle, auto insurance, and willingness to use vehicle for work. Cost of gas will be reimbursed at the federal rate ($0.56 per mile currently). Experience with 4wd preferred.
- Strong interest and knowledge in biology, botany, restoration ecology, environmental science or a related field.
- Ability to work independently as well as with other staff and a diverse group of volunteers and interns.
- Strong written and oral communication skills; strong computer and organizational skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to follow scientific protocols.
- Ability to perform strenuous work in arduous conditions and inclement weather, including hiking through uneven terrain, in dense vegetation (including scratching/stinging and rash causing plants, such as poison oak and Himalayan blackberry), and being on your feet for up to 8 hours a day. Exposure to biting, stinging, poisonous/venomous animals is also to be expected.
- Ability to carry monitoring equipment/tools that weighs up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to use hand and mechanized tools for ecological restoration activities.
- Experience with herbicide application, preferred.
- Comfortable calling, recruiting, and interacting with community members
- Attention and adherence to safety protocols, including ability to lead safety talks to crews of volunteers.
- Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and flexible.
