WDFW HATCHERIES DIVISION 

RINGOLD SPRINGS HATCHERY

Mesa, Washington

Anticipated Appointment Length:
3 Months – September 27, 2021 – December 31, 2021
 

Duties

Our Fish Hatchery Technicians, 

  • Sort and spawn adult anadromous species to include salmon and steelhead.
  • Assist hatchery incubation activities such as enumerating fish eggs. 
  • Feed juvenile salmonids and other species.
  • Operate high pressure pumps and clean ponds, intakes, tanks, troughs, and egg trays.
  • Assist hatchery staff with grounds maintenance at the facility including mowing, weed eating, trimming trees and bushes, road maintenance, net mending, garbage clean-up, janitorial duties, and equipment maintenance and repairs.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Work and/or operate vehicles and equipment in all weather conditions, lift up to 50 pounds, and stand for long periods of time, kneeling, bending, squatting, sitting, crawling on hands and knees, climbing, working in confined spaces, and sometimes dusty or very hot environments, working in and around and over water with waders on, use of a respirator and other forms of personal protection equipment (PPE), may handle chemicals for therapeutic fish treatments and herbicides appropriately and accordance with labels under direct supervision. Demonstrate safe handling and storage of flammable fuel oils, compressed gases, lubricants, pesticides and herbicides.
  • Schedule:
    1. Working hours are normally an 8-hour-day, 5 days per week but can vary according to the needs of the program and resource. 
    2. Normally does not exceed 40 hours per week unless emergency conditions exist. 
    3. Some holidays required.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Varies based on needs of the program. Less than 5%.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Occasionally service, repair and safely operate various forms of hatchery equipment to include ATV’s, UTV’s, tractors, trailers, skid steers, backhoes, spray equipment, lawn mowers, hatchery vehicles, pumps, chillers, water heaters, generators and other rented or borrowed equipment at this facility. 
    2. Basic knowledge or general understanding of electrical, plumbing, welding, and construction. It is desirable to have some basic knowledge of various types of power and hand tools, their applications and demonstrate safe use.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. This position requires the ability to work closely with complex staff, constituent groups, anglers, other agencies and intra agency staff; these include area and district biologists and fish health staff, USFWS and public utilities as well as tribal and other federal, county, state entities and vendors in a professional manner.

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED. 

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A valid driver’s license is required. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Basic fish culture techniques, rearing procedures, and the ability to identify adult salmonids.
  • Ability to service, repair and operate safely various forms of hatchery equipment to include ATV’s, UTV’s, tractors, trailers, skid steers, backhoes, spray equipment, lawn mowers, hatchery vehicles, pumps, chillers, water heaters, generators and other rented or borrowed equipment at this facility. 
  • Basic knowledge or general understanding of electrical, plumbing, welding, and construction. 
  • Basic knowledge of various types of power and hand tools, their applications and demonstrate safe use.
  • Water dynamics (e.g. flows, flow patterns, availability, temperature, etc.).
  • Basic math skills (add/subtract/multiply/divide) and the ability to calculate and understand quantities and proportions.
  • Computer knowledge – basic understanding of spreadsheets and word processing).
  • Calibration of specialized instruments (e.g. scales, Dissolved Oxygen meters).
  • Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of available resources and guides needed to help complete forms and documents correctly.
  • Applicable agency policies and procedures.
  • Safety regulations.
