Ecostudies Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of native species and their ecosystems. Our natural environment faces complex and dynamic threats which we address with effective partnerships, conservation research and strategic, science-based management. Because ecological conservation is vitally linked to community, we work to promote environmental justice by removing barriers to engagement and improving access to environmental education and career opportunities for underserved populations. In particular, we recognize the inextricable relationship between Indigenous peoples and their ancestral lands and seek to actively support that relationship. Amidst the mountains and forests of the Pacific Northwest are open rolling grasslands mixed with oak savannas, pine woodlands, and rich wetlands. The intertwining habitats form a mosaic that supports a rich array of native birds, mammals, flowers and butterflies-some of which are found nowhere else on Earth. The prairies are now one of the rarest habitats in the U.S; only 1-3% of the original habitat remains. Ecostudies Institute works with a wide range of partners to conserve and restore habitat structure and function to these prairies and their associated rare species. Ecostudies seeks four fulltime AmeriCorps members to fill prairie restoration service opportunities throughout southwest Washington. These positions include a Restoration Technician, a Prairie Science Technician, an Avian Science Technician and a Restoration and Outreach Coordinator. All members will learn restoration and monitoring techniques, contribute to landscape-scale restoration efforts, and become involved in the PNW conservation community.

Member Duties : The Avian Science technician will coordinate volunteers monitoring nest boxes, assist with mapping territories, find and monitor nests, re-sight color-banded birds, conduct behavioral observations, conduct bird surveys (point counts and line transects), sample vegetation, and enter data. The member may also assist with mist-netting and banding western bluebirds. The member will also support habitat restoration activities, which may include invasive plant control and controlled burning. This member will serve with Ecostudies Institute staff at several prairie sites throughout western Washington. This position entails a high level of responsibility and will draw heavily on the Americorps member’s people skills, sound work ethic, scientific background and positive attitude. During the breeding season (April – August) the work schedule will be from 05:30 AM to 2:00 PM with a 30 minute meal break.
