You love working outdoors providing important environmental work conducting angler creel surveys for Chinook, Pink, Coho, and Chum salmon in the Green River Basin.  

 

Be part of a dynamic and diverse team of Scientific Technicians and Fish Biologists that support the mission by obtaining data that provides the information necessary to estimate catch and effort statistics for recreational fisheries management.

Duties

Conducts angler creel surveys for Chinook, Pink, Coho, and Chum salmon in the Green River Basin.

          Tasks Include: 

  • Conducting visual examinations of fish to identify them to species and obtaining information from anglers fishing for salmon including angling duration, and species target, caught, and released. 
  • Explaining survey project, procedures, and objectives to sports fishermen to enlist their cooperation in providing quality data for the study. 
  • Walking, biking, and driving long distances along the river to reach the riverbank where anglers are fishing.
  • Rowing a pontoon boat in the river to access and count anglers.

Keeps accurate records of survey data and summarizes results in both a PowerPoint and report.

Tasks Include:

  • Accurately recording and compiling creel survey data.
  • Entering data into Excel on a daily basis.
  • Compiling charts, drawing graphs, and preparing illustrations to convey the data.
  • Creating a PowerPoint presentation of results and providing a summary report for the creels. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Work includes working alone for long hours in physically demanding conditions, climbing down steep banks to reach anglers, and walking, biking, and driving long distances, sometimes in adverse weather conditions. 
    2. Work may also include rowing a pontoon boat in the river. 
    3. Hazards may also include bees (yellow jackets) and slippery surfaces.
  • Schedule: 
    1. The primary work schedule will be 40 hours per week, Wednesday – Saturday.
    2. Surveys will be conducted both in the morning (ex: 6:00 a.m. start) and evening (ex: 4:00 p.m. start) with a break in-between. 
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Local travel to field sites is required daily.
    2. An agency vehicle will be provided for surveys.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Bicycle, laptop, pontoon boat or raft, personal flotation device (PFD). 
  • Customer Interactions: 
    • Extensive contact with recreational anglers on the river and boaters at boat ramps.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED including one year of high school science.

AND

  • Two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

  • Two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. 

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Ability to: 

  • Effectively and correctly identify, collect, organize, and document survey field data.
  • Consistently and accurately document information and update records/databases.
  • Work independently with very little oversight.

Experience with: 

  • Microsoft Excel.
  • Microsoft Word.
  • Microsoft PowerPoint.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A valid driver’s license is required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of: 

  • Salmon life history and previous experience identifying Pacific Salmon.

Experience with:

  • Interviewing members of the public. 
  • Angling for trout or salmon and interacting with other anglers. 
  • Collecting data in the field and recording data accurately. 
  • Rafting, kayaking, or similar activity on the water.
