This position augments the Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) mission by providing support in survey coordination, implementation, evaluation, and data analysis related to operation, policy, and regulation development associated with outdoor-related recreation. 

  • With direction from the DWR human dimensions specialist assists agency staff in survey and sampling methodology, and coordinates the Biennial Hunter and Angler Surveys. 
  • Designs and conducts, or provides expert input for DWR staff on other surveys (e.g. R3 evaluations, WMA use, creel surveys, trout survey, wildlife viewing studies, etc.). 
  • Coordinates with external partners and manages data related to human dimensions project. 
  • Communicates human dimensions program, projects, and results to constituents.  
  • Represents DWR at professional meetings related to survey and human dimensions research, and in coordination with the Agency Human Dimensions Specialist presents findings to the DWR Leadership team, the Director’s office, the DWR Board, and constituents. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of human dimensions survey methodologies and research design, sampling protocols, and statistical analyses. Considerable knowledge in preparing technical, scientific, and popular reports. 
  • Technical knowledge of wildlife management principles and practices with preference toward experimental design, sampling theory, application of human dimensions to wildlife issues, and planning principles. 
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully communicate orally and in writing with a broad array of individuals, groups, and professionals. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups to independently administer research and management programs. 
  • Considerable knowledge and skill in computer software and software applications, including statistical software and packages for human dimensions surveying, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • High School or GED Equivalent with experience in wildlife management, fisheries management, natural resources, human dimensions or closely related field.
  • A valid Virginia Driver’s License or the ability to obtain required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree or higher in wildlife management, fisheries management, natural resources, human dimensions or closely related field with considerable human dimensions of natural resource management or conservation social sciences experience. 
  • Strong academic background in human dimensions or social science research methods, requiring a formally written thesis preferred. Preferred, experience with one of the following programs- Program R, SAS, or Python.
