  • To assist hatchery management with daily operations to include fish culture duties related to hatching, rearing and stocking/distribution of brook, brown and rainbow trout. 
  • Maintaining accurate hatchery records. Performing maintenance and landscaping work with the use of small hand tools and equipment. 
  • Providing technical assistance and guidance to less tenured technicians. 
  • Assisting with maintenance of grounds and facilities to ensure safe and secure 24/7 operation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Incumbent should possess knowledge of aquaculture techniques, preferably trout culture, fish health issues and hatchery operations. 
  • Thorough knowledge of stocking and transportation of warm and cold water species. 
  • Knowledge of building construction and maintenance techniques to include electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. 
  • Skilled in the use of relevant tools and equipment to include manual and power tools, fish feeders, mowers, tractors, stocking truck and lab equipment. 
  • Skilled in the use of PC and Microsoft Office software, especially Word, Excel and Access. 
  • Skilled in the collection and recording of physical, chemical and biological data. 
  • Ability to construct, maintain and repair hatchery equipment and facilities. 
  • Ability to perform manual labor to include moderate to heavy lifting in excess of 40 pounds. 
  • Ability to work in varying indoor, outdoor, wet and dry climates. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing to include diverse stakeholders , agency staff and constituents and to effectively manage relationships with the public at large and in small groups situations. 
  • Ability to interpret and analyze data to include calculating complex mathematical problems related to water flows, volume and disease treatments. 
  • Ability to develop and track budgets and prepare monthly reports on fish lot performance, facility conditions and budgetary expenditures as required. 
  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and communicate scientific and regulatory FDA, EPA and DEQ documents, advising fisheries technicians and agency management of the ramifications and implications.  
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent 
  • Must possess, or be eligible for a valid Virginia driver’s license with a Class “B” with tank endorsement within six months of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional related experience in fisheries and wildlife management with emphasis in trout culture is a plus. 
  • Any combination of additional education from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for some of the required experience. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aquaculture, Biological Sciences or a related field.
