This permanent, full-time, unclassified position in the Law Enforcement Division is located in District 1D of the Department’s western region (Region 1) which includes the counties of Stanton, Morton, Grant, Stevens, Haskell, Seward, Gray, Meade, Ness, Hodgeman, Ford, Clark, Pawnee, Edwards, Kiowa, Commanche, Stafford, Pratt and Barber, and is directly supervised by Capt. Jeff Sutton. County of residence may be negotiable within the assigned district.

The incumbent supervises and organizes, directs, coordinates, plans, schedules, assigns, reviews and evaluates the work of the District’s Natural Resource Officers who are responsible for enforcement, education and administration of state laws, rules and regulations; serves as assistant to the Regional Operations Captain, includes providing requested technical and general information pertaining to enforcement problems, needs, inventories, budget, laws and regulations, policies, procedures, programs and training; enforces laws and regulations by patrolling an assigned area, includes checking licenses and permits of hunters, fishermen, furharvesters and boaters, protecting department properties, investigating violations, collecting evidence, making arrests, preparing cases for court and testifying; maintains enforcement equipment; prepares and submits reports; promotes and assists in coordinating interaction and working relationships with other department divisions; attends meetings; provides animal damage control, wildlife collection and disposal, wildlife surveys, wildlife stocking, general maintenance on department lands and assists in other department programs; provides information to citizens, sports persons, landowners and other department divisions. This position also performs field level enforcement of laws and regulations of the State (such as patrolling on land and water, checking licenses, and investigating violations, etc.).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must currently have the minimum qualifications: be a full-time certified Law Enforcement Officer as recognized by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center/CPOST or have a certification that is reciprocal from another state and acceptable to Kansas Law Enforcement certification standards; and three years of experience working as a certified full-time Law Enforcement Officer. While a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college is preferred, it is not required if the applicant possesses extensive knowledge or experience in wildlife management, conservation practices, and /or wildlife enforcement laws.

Preferred degrees include but are not limited to: Fisheries, Wildlife, Conservation Ecology/Management/Biology, Biology with Field Coursework emphasis, Environmental Ecology, Wildlife Range Management, Wildlife, Outdoor Enterprise Management and Criminal Justice. The successful candidate must possess a valid driver’s license, pass a background check, be a credible witness in court, and be free of any Brady or Giglio issues.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: This class requires the employee to be certified as a law enforcement officer by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Commission and the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training.

This class requires the use of a firearm for law enforcement duties; therefore, to be eligible for appointment to a position in this class, candidates cannot have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth in 18 U.S.C.§ 992 (g) (8) and (9).To be eligible for certification in the state of Kansas, one must also be free of any diversions from a felony or misdemeanor domestic violence crime as set forth by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Act.

Candidates for positions in this class must have the following: be a U.S. citizen; be 21 years of age at the time of appointment; free of conviction of any crime punishable by imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison; and is required to pass a physical exam administered by the hiring agency.

This class requires that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services and a thorough pre employment background investigation.
