Greenpeace is a global, independent campaigning organization that uses peaceful protest and creative communication to expose global environmental problems and promote solutions that are essential to a green and peaceful future.

The Distributed Organizing Team is launching the next phase of our organizing program — and we are looking for a Distributed Organizer to help us lift it off the ground! Together, we’ll build a network of Greenpeace Action Pods — small teams of volunteers that take action locally to move us towards an end of the fossil fuel era. We know that volunteers are hungry to do more for our climate — our role is to give them the skills they need to organize and act in their own communities!

We have just a decade left to stop the worst outcomes of climate change — and the only way we can win is by building a diverse, active, and leader-ful climate movement that is strong enough to change the political weather. In the next five years, we are working to stop the expansion of fossil fuels in the US, and pass a just and managed transition plan away from fossil fuels.

Our ideal candidate is somebody with a passion for distributed organizing, who has a vision for what an equitable, justice-centered environmental movement looks like.

The Distributed Organizer will:

  • Support volunteer leaders in building, managing, and growing teams or “Greenpeace Action Pods” that take action in their own communities across the country.
  • Supporting volunteer leaders and identifying strong leaders to move into a coaching role.
  • Create and implement supporter pathways that progressively grow the number of deeply engaged volunteers and leaders across our volunteer network.
  • Use digital tools such as Spoke (our textbanking tool), Everyaction (our CRM), Control Shift (our distributed events tool), Slack (our volunteer communication platform), Zoom, and others to organize and mobilize Greenpeace supporters.
  • Design and facilitate trainings and mass calls for groups ranging from 10-200 volunteers to build their organizing skills, as well as to strengthen their equity, justice, and inclusion lens.
  • Create resources for onboarding and training volunteers across teams, and produce materials with motivating tactics to keep distributed volunteer leaders engaged.
  • Create systems to track and analyze data, and support the Distributed Organizing Team in using data to implement learnings and improve performance over time.
  • Keep up with industry best practices in distributed organizing and try out new ideas with Greenpeace’s supporter base.

Minimum requirements include, but not limited to:

  • At least 3 years of experience in organizing — including 1 or more years of distributed organizing experience (or equivalent electoral cycles)
  • Experience organizing and developing volunteers, particularly in organizing skills such as recruitment, planning, meeting facilitation, 1 on 1s, coaching, etc.
  • Excellence in the field of distributed organizing. Having a deep understanding of best practices, as well as an analysis on which areas our program needs to build out to make our organizing more effective.
  • The ability to think critically about issues around equity and justice, and a commitment to building a diverse, inclusive, and justice-centered volunteer network.
  • Experience managing projects from start to finish — including setting the goals and timeline, breaking the project down into subprojects and/or tasks, and ensuring that the project stays on track.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with teammates, including delegating tasks and accepting delegation from others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to try new things and learn from both failures and successes.
  • Ability to be agile and responsive to rapidly evolving events.
  • Passion for mobilizing people and building power for progressive movements.
  • Fluency in Spanish preferred.
