Duties

  • Plans, performs, or assigns management activities and studies on wildlife, plants, and habitat on wildlife areas. 
  • Determines sampling design necessary to collect accurate information to inform effective management. 
  • Performs independent research and/or field investigations. 
  • Completes follow up monitoring to vegetation management efforts on the wildlife area.
  • Assesses populations of target wildlife and habitat conditions for Wildlife Area management activities and goals. 
  • Surveys and monitors native and invasive plant species and habitats, research management options, and makes recommendations on best management practices.
  • Collects and analyzes data on recreational use of Wildlife Areas, including hunting, fishing, and non-consumptive recreation.
  • Plans, supervises, and instructs Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) crew operations, leads volunteers, work crews, and contractors.
  • Responds to the public, highlights reporting, applies for grants, and meets with involved agencies/non-governmental organizations. 
  • Administers grazing and agricultural leases.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Work is conducted in the field approximately 65% of the time, the remaining time is spent in an office setting.
    2. Field work entails working in the wetlands or upland in shrub/steppe habitats while safely operating tractors, heavy equipment, trucks, ATVs, boats, and performing herbicide application, irrigation, and water control structure operation.
    3. Work is performed all weather conditions including extreme heat or snow and sometimes over difficult terrain and surfaces while transporting equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. 
  • Schedule: 
    1. Typically – Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Seldom travel to attend trainings or meetings – includes occasional overnight trips. 
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Trucks, ATV’s, boats, trailers, tractors with a variety of implements, heavy equipment, sprayers, power tools and hand tools.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Interacts with recreationalists in the field, on the phone, and through email correspondence.
    2. Reports to and/or interacts with several agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGO’s).
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One (1) year of experience in agriculture, fish, wildlife, habitat management or research (or a related field).  

Experience with: 

  • Monitoring vegetation transects, wildlife population and recreational use. 
  • Working on management and enhancement of upland, wetland, shrub steppe, and riparian plan communities.
  • Operating motor vehicles, small boats, ATVs, herbicide application equipment and tractors.

Knowledge of: 

  • Water level manipulation to manage and enhance desirable wetland and moist soil vegetation.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Pesticide Applicators License (must be obtained within one (1) year of hire).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science. 
  • One year of professional experience in fish/wildlife/habitat management. 

Basic understanding of: 

  • General grazing concepts and monitoring practices. 
  • Irrigation systems, equipment, and concepts.  
  • Environmental rules and regulations.

Experience: 

  • Working with water level manipulation to manage and enhance desirable wetland and moist soil vegetation.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Red Card (Wildfire Training).  
  • Pesticide Applicators License.
