This is a part-time, 0.5 FTE, overtime-eligible project position on the Olympia Campus of The Evergreen State College. The position is funded through August 31, 2022.

Salary/Wages: Salary Level 5, Step 1

Position Purpose

The Evergreen State College is committed to enriching the learning experience for all students by cultivating a diverse and inclusive community. Reporting to the Associate Director of First Peoples Multicultural, Trans, and Queer Services (FPMTQS), this position provides outreach and culturally relevant support to undocumented students, students with DACA, and students from mixed status families. This position seeks to increase these students’ success and retention through advising on academic, personal, and career matters and by connecting students to the College’s programs and retention services as well as to local resources.

Essential Functions

  • Build strong interpersonal relationships and provide culturally relevant support for undocumented students, students with DACA, and students from mixed status families tailored to each student’s needs, through appointments, drop-in, telephone, email, and in group/workshop settings, and through referrals to academic, personal, career, financial, and legal resources.
  • Under general supervision, facilitate and oversee relevant campus programming and community- building activities focused on student engagement, belonging, and retention. These may include WASFA workshops, Know Your Rights workshops, scholarship writing sessions in collaboration with on-going campus efforts.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Undocumented Student Task Force (USTF) and Latinx Standing Committee (LSC) to assist with resources related to their goals and objectives and connect with appropriate registered student organizations such as Familia student club.
  • Serve as a resource and connector for inclusive excellence programming and leadership activities across the college.
  • Under general supervision, develop and collaborate with staff to promote student engagement, retention, and student success. This includes maintaining an understanding of the work of other College units and making appropriate student referrals.
  • Provide support to First Peoples professional staff in planning and staffing activities or educational workshops as needed for New Student orientation, quarterly Academic Fairs or campus-wide engagement events.
  • Provide consultation in the development of trainings to keep Evergreen staff and faculty up to date on issues and resources concerning underserved and undocumented students.
  • Maintain campus community informed about opportunities and resources for undocumented students such as jobs, internships, scholarships, events, conferences, and fellowships.
  • Participate in staff meetings, retreats, and ongoing professional development activities.

Maintain weekly meetings with supervisor and regular communication with First Peoples’ professional and student staff.

Maintain weekly meeting with designated representative from Academic & Career Advising.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills demonstrating cultural competency to effectively and sensitively work with all underserved students.
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural competency with immigrant communities in the U.S.
  • Understanding of linguistic, racial, and cultural diversity within Latinx communities, including indigeneity and AfroLatinidades.
  • Excellent skills and abilities in student advising, counseling, and presenting to groups.
  • Experience designing and implementing events and programs relating to underserved students, particularly undocumented students, students with DACA, and students from mixed status families.
  • Knowledge and understanding of cultural adjustment processes for first-generation, low income, and undocumented students, students with DACA, and students from mixed status families in higher education.
  • Familiarity with relevant policies, such as DACA, HB 1079, and The Real Hope Act.
  • Awareness of state and local community resources, including affordable legal advising and services to non-citizens.
  • Ability to act in accordance with the terms of federal regulations around student records (FERPA) and best practices for confidentiality, respect, and protection of sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and collaboration as a part of a small and innovative team.
  • Proficiency with technology and tools such as Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Outlook, Teams, etc) and Zoom.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated experience in advising, teaching, or advocating for students from disadvantaged or underserved populations in education.

Desired Qualifications

  • Professional experience working with underserved students in higher education or academic enrichment programs, with an emphasis on undocumented students and families.
  • Native or near-native fluency in both English and Spanish; additional languages a plus.
