Position Summary:

This position is required to spend the majority of time working in the field assisting the Director and Biologist. Under the general direction of the Director, responsible for providing technical hunting and wildlife expertise to the department.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Works in the field assisting the Wildlife Biologist with elk Surveys 
  2. Will be responsible for performing ceremonial hunts when needed This includes hunting, properly dressing and quartering the animal, and carrying it back to the Tribe for the ceremony. May travel out of state to harvest animals. Responsible for transporting meat back to Tribe.
  3. Distribute and inventory meat that is purchased and harvested, processed and maintained by the Wildlife department. Responsible for timely completion of meat surplus and freezer inventories. Records all required information regarding distribution of resources.
  4. Assists the director with license and tags issuance, including those needed for ceremonial hunts.
  5. Coordinates youth mentoring classes in order to educate Tribal youth on hunting safety.
  6. Maintains garden and habitat, such as scotch broom, at various locations that the tribe owns. Performs general maintenance on tribal properties.
  7. Responsible for maintaining and inspecting farming equipment and vehicles and scheduling repairs, as needed.
  8. Takes care of animals the tribe chooses to farm including pigs, cows, buffalo and chickens.
  9. Remains current on hunting and wildlife issues for the department.
  10. Performs some administrative tasks for the Director and Biologist such as picking up and distributing mail from Administration Building, order supplies, prepare expenditure requests, and maintain office files and maintain log sheets for meat distribution and work locations.
  11. Assists with other projects as assigned by Director.
  12. Maintain relationships outside the tribe including state, federal agencies regarding hunting and hunting lands.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities but may train new employees, as directed by Director.

Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma/GED required and five years of hunting experience, including demonstrated ability to perform successful ceremonial hunts, field surveys, firearm safety, etc. and some demonstrated knowledge/experience in administrative/clerical skills required; or satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. Beginner computer skills in Word and Excel are preferred. Knowledge and ability of proper use and safety of heavy equipment machinery.
Language Skills
Employee must demonstrate the ability to interact tactfully and positively with Tribal members. Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from community members. Ability to write reports and business correspondence.
 
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
 
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Demonstrated ability to read maps and find bearings in heavily forested areas.
Other Skills and Abilities
Must have ability to be culturally sensitive in a diverse environment.
Must maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
Must be willing to work in the field a majority of the time in order to assist the Director and Wildlife Biologist. Must demonstrate ability to perform the physical aspects of this job to include hiking miles while working in heavily forested areas with uneven terrain in all types of weather conditions.
Must demonstrate a strong knowledge of firearm and other hunting equipment safety.
Must be willing to acceptably pass a background check prior to and periodically throughout employment.
Must be willing work nights and weekends, as scheduled by Director
Licenses
Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted state driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
Must have a valid First Aid/CPR card or be willing to obtain within 30 days of hire.
Maintain CDL license, if required to drive department cooler truck.
