The Tennessee Aquarium celebrates the rich biodiversity of the Southeast through its exhibits and is actively engaged in preserving and restoring that biodiversity through its work in the field. The Aquarium’s research arm, the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute, has a focused expertise in restoring freshwater ecosystems and helping people appreciate the need for environmental health in our region.

 

The Reintroduction Biologist is part of a team that supports the freshwater conservation programs of the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute by providing daily husbandry, field assistance, and long-range planning for reintroduction programs. The Reintroduction Biologist’s primary responsibilities include care of aquatic animals (primarily fishes) in recirculating systems. The Reintroduction Biologist develops or assists with new research projects to advance captive propagation systems and programs. The position helps develop strong working relationships with reintroduction partners inside and outside the Aquarium to reach program goals. The Reintroduction Biologist coordinates and/or assists with fieldwork for reintroduction programs. Finally, the Reintroduction Biologist conducts outreach relating to reintroduction programs for students and lifelong learners as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Works as part of the Reintroduction team to provide daily husbandry for reintroduction program animals including feeding, maintaining exceptional water quality, and managing animal health.
  2. Conducts experiments, gathers data, and interprets results to support reintroduction activities in collaboration with members of the reintroduction team and other conservation staff.
  3. Interfaces effectively with TNACI reintroduction partners, including state and federal agency personnel, university professors, and other non-profit organizations.
  4. Coordinates fieldwork and other field support for monitoring, fish collection, and animal releases for reintroduction programs.
  5. Coordinates TNACI’s summer reintroduction assistantship program with Conservation Manager and other full-time Reintroduction Biologist.
  6. Assists with data entry relating to husbandry and monitoring activities.
  7. Collaborates with development department to seek funding for new or existing reintroduction programs. Sets budgets and manages expenditures for grant-funded projects.
  8. Assists with outreach activities, both in-classroom and online, promoting TNACI reintroduction programs to children and adults from a variety of communities, particularly to those from groups currently underrepresented in conservation programs.
  9. Helps oversee long range planning and development of new reintroduction programs.

Key Qualifications

  • Masters of Science degree with 1-2 years experience or Bachelors of Science with 3-5 years of experience in the field.
  • Experience in captive care of aquatic animals using recirculating aquaculture.
  • Ability to complete some light plumbing and carpentry work.
  • Experience in aquatic fieldwork, including boat operation.
  • Some computer skills and familiarity with Word, Excel, and social media sites.

Full-time, hourly; Salary range $30,000-$35,000; Weekend and holiday work required
