Anticipated Career Seasonal Appointment Length:

8.5 Months: September 16 – May 25

Duties
  • Conduct adult salmonid spawning ground surveys by foot or boat in the Toutle Basin.  
  • Identify and enumerate (collects/gathers data from) adult salmonids (live and dead) and redds – using GPS devices to mark redd locations.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, operation, and removal of adult salmonid weirs. 
  • Capture, identify, enumerate, handle, and tag and/or mark adult salmonids at weir traps for mark/recapture programs and distribution monitoring. 
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance, operation and removal of monitoring structures and devices for adult and juvenile salmonid monitoring – such as traps and weirs.
  • Collect broodstock for established enhancement and hatchery programs. 
  • Sample and spawn fish at hatcheries.
  • Accurately record and proof data collected during field activities.
  • Download information from various handheld data collection devices such as data loggers, GPS units, Passive Integrated Transponders (PIT) tag readers and Coded Wire Tag (CWT) detectors.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards: 
    1. Most of the work is conducted outdoors, during all-weather conditions, in adverse environmental conditions and includes conducting spawning ground surveys by foot or cataraft – spawned out salmon carcasses contain strong odors. 
    2. Field work includes climbing in/out of motorized and non-motorized boats and walking up to (15) fifteen miles per day on rough terrain/wet slippery surfaces and carrying large, live and dead fish that weigh approximately 30 – 100 pounds – this includes repetitively carrying up to 70 pounds for short distances. 
    3. Approximately 15% of the work is performed in an office or laboratory setting.
  • Schedule: 
    1. Typically, Monday – Thursday – 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. 
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
    3. May include working on weekends and holidays as needed. 
  • Travel Requirements: 
    1. Daily travel from the duty station to/from field locations is required. 
    2. Overnight travel may be required.
  • Tools and Equipment: 
    1. Basic hand/carpentry tools, winches, pulleys/blocks, motorized/non-motorized watercraft, 4×4 vehicles and must have the ability to tow vehicles. 
    2. 200’ beach seines, PIT tag readers, CWT detectors, GPS units, weighing scales, handheld data loggers, PDAs, and computers.
  • Customer Interactions: 
    1. Interacting with other departmental personnel, personnel from other agencies, commercial fishers, and the public.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school/GED, including one year of high school science AND Two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.  

     OR 

  • Graduation from high school/GED including one year of high school science AND Two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist. 

AND 

  • Basic operation of a personal computer.
  • Ability to do basic functions in Microsoft Office and Access.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • A valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to: 

  • Identify salmonids and other fish species in larval, juvenile and/or adult life stages.
  • Identify salmonid redds.
  • Row non-motorized, oar-framed boats such as drift boats and catarafts in white water conditions – class 1 through 3 rapids.
  • Complete advanced functions in Microsoft Excel and Access.
  • Operate handheld GPS and data logger device.
  • Work alone in remote locations and work well with others in both a field and office setting.

Knowledge of: 

  • Resistance board and fixed panel adult fish weirs.
  • Operation of rotary screw and fence-panel (with live box) juvenile traps.
  • Fish marking and tagging protocols.
  • Fishery monitoring, observing, and sampling.
  • Commercial fishing gear types and methods.
  • Basic operations of motorized vessels. 
  • How to operate CWT and PIT tag detectors.
