Duties

Under the supervision of the Construction & Maintenance Project Supervisor, this position will be assisting and contributing towards all aspects of park maintenance within the Kitsap Area.  The Maintenance Mechanic’s primary responsibility is to repair facilities and provide staff with well-maintained tools and equipment.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Maintain the park area systems including domestic water systems, sewage management systems, park restrooms, vehicles, equipment, park buildings, roadway surfaces, boat launches, buoys, docks, and park landscape.
  • Perform semi-skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, welding, metal fabrication, electrical, heating, ventilation, mechanical work, and minor vehicle repair.
  • Complete routine maintenance procedures on park facilities and equipment including pumps, control panels, shower meters, and token dispensers.
  • Monitor and maintain water and sewer systems and pumps including distribution lines, connections, fixtures, reservoirs, pressure systems, and drains, inside and outside of buildings.
  • Operate, maintain, and instruct other staff how to use equipment including shovels, rakes, axes, digging and pry bars.
  • Oversee the maintenance and correct use of all park rolling stock.
  • Responsible for being aware of all safety requirements that affect the present task and appropriate use of personal protective equipment and orientating others working on the task, or nearby, of the hazards and their required response.
  • Responsible for safety reporting, and routine safety meetings.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
  • Valid unrestricted (except corrective lenses) driver’s license.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working for Washington State Parks or a similar parks and recreation entity.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office products, such as Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Experience in driving assorted vehicles, tractors, mowers, dump trucks & trailers, backhoes, road graders, cats, stump grinders, brush chippers, brush hog and bucket truck.
  • Experience working with various hand & power tools, chainsaws, carpenter tools (tool belt, hammer, chisel, saw, level), ground tools (shovel, rake, pick, axe), mechanical tools (wrench, pliers, grease gun, torque wrench), power tools (circular saw, table saw, drill, grinder, sander) and voice radios.

UNIFORM INFORMATION:
All seasonal Maintenance Mechanic 1 employees are required to wear a uniform.  A complete and properly worn uniform helps establish the professional identity of a Maintenance Mechanic and promotes respect as a Washington State Parks employee.  All seasonal Maintenance Mechanic 1s will receive 6 shirts within the first year (2 shirts per calendar year after the first year), 1 jacket every 3 years, 1 baseball cap every year, 1 safety vest every 3 years, and a clothing stipend of $200 per year, and a $250 boot stipend every 2 years.  Uniform stipends are intended to offset the cost of clothing worn in the workplace such as pants, boots, raingear, etc.
