After decades of struggle and the 2014 Oso Slide, Glacier Peak Institute was formed with the mission to empower youth to build resilient and sustainable rural communities and healthy ecosystems across the Glacier Peak region of Western Washington through innovative, action-based education programs integrating Science, Technology, recreation, Engineering, art, Mathematics, and skill-building (STrEaMs). In Darrington, the schools have experienced a serious reduction in funding over the last 20 years. At the same time, poverty has risen by 50%, with Darrington being the lowest median income ($38,000) and highest poverty (17.2%) in Snohomish County. Despite having high risk youth (1 in 25 will be dead before the age of 30, 3 times the national average), few programs reach our remote area in the North Cascades. Our programs also serve Concrete where they have the highest poverty (24.4%) and lowest median income ($28,000) in Skagit County with similar cuts to schools. By building relationships between rural and urban classrooms, GPI’s programs encourage connection and understanding, break cultural misconceptions, and engage youth from across Western Washington to be integral parts of their ecosystems. We invest in the tools and experiences rural youth need to harness their full potential and directly contribute to the ecological and economic regeneration of their community.
The Program Support Coordinator will directly serve with at-risk youth by: creating and supporting STrEaMs curriculum and projects, developing after-school and summer recreation activities, establish bridges between communities, and expand and replicate existing programs to other struggling rural communities. Interviews will be during Summer 2021.
Member Duties : Program Support Coordinators will increase GPI’s capacity and program reach. Service members will be responsible for: developing and educating youth through outdoor school STEM, recreation, and stewardship opportunities; collaborate with partner organizations on creating programs and coordinate outings; expand partnership opportunities by continuously seeking ways to build cultural exchanges between urban, suburban, and rural youth; coordinate, recruit, organize, and inspire volunteers; improve and implement a system for youth outreach and communication to diversify participation in programming; lead recreation and program events; implement safety guidelines, protocols, and best practices for programming; empower youth to utilize Growth Mindset to inspire resilience and grit; and expand and replicate GPI programs to benefit other struggling rural communities and increasing the exposure urban and rural youth have to nature.
