At Saltwater Inc., we believe that high quality data is vital to the health of our fisheries and oceans: our mission is to provide that data. Saltwater is a small, innovative company that is currently recruiting a qualified Albacore Biological Sampling Support Specialist for a federal contract we are bidding on. This position is based out of the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), and will have varying hours.

The Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) has a long history of cooperative research with the commercial albacore surface fleet, which is the largest fishery for highly migratory species (HMS) on the U.S. West Coast. Over the years, projects have included archival tagging, biological sampling to support life history and ecology studies, electronic logbook development and onboard length sampling. The Albacore Working Group (ALBWG) of the International Scientific Committee for Tuna and Tuna-like Species in the North Pacific Ocean (ISC) conducts stock assessments of the North Pacific albacore.

As mandated by the Magnuson-Stevens Act, the Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) is responsible for research and stock assessments supporting the sustainable management of HMS fish stocks. Albacore are managed nationally under the Pacific Fisheries Management Council (PFMC) HMS Fisheries Management Plan (FMP) and the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council (WPRFMC) Pelagic Fishery Ecosystem Plan (FEP), and internationally by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) and the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC). The role of the Albacore Biological Sampling Support Specialist will directly impact the underlying data used in the assessment of Albacore.

The  Albacore Biological Sampling Support Specialist will facilitate the sampling and transportation of albacore biological samples from commercial fisheries to the SWFSC, and facilitate chemical analyses of the albacore samples.

Our ideal candidate would be someone with experience in albacore tuna sample collection, experience in vessel communication and outreach, and strong organization, documentation, and coordination skills.

Duties

  • Obtain samples from juvenile albacore over prescribed age classes, during the 2022 fishing season
  • Facilitate the acquisition of adult albacore from the Central Pacific longline fleet during the 2022 fishing season
  • Facilitate transportation of samples to SWFSC
  • Facilitate the chemical analyses of selected samples

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree, or higher, from an accredited college or university with a major directly related in a field of study as related to the requirements of specific task order with emphasis in fisheries, oceanography, natural science, or marine biology
  • Strong communication, documentation, organization, and coordination skills
  • Ability to follow sampling procedures
  • Ability to maintain sampling equipment

Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience.
