EARTHLAB is a visionary institute that pushes boundaries to address our most pressing environmental challenges, with a current focus on climate and its intersection with social justice. EARTHLAB does this by connecting the University of Washington (UW) to communities, businesses, non-profits, public agencies, Tribal nations and others to co-produce actionable research that generates solutions and strategies for local and global impact. EARTHLAB’s vision, an equitable, just and sustainable world where people and planet thrive, supports one of the University’s biggest goals. As a Carnegie-classified Community Engagement University, the UW aspires to be the #1 university in the world as measured by impact. EARTHLAB is inspired by and committed to this challenge.

The EARTHLAB Innovation Grants Specialist reports to the Executive Director of EARTHLAB, supporting the development and implementation of the Innovation Grants Program. This position is located on the Seattle Campus but will include flexibility for some remote work. The Innovation Grants Program (EARTHLAB.uw.edu/grants) invests in teams of University of Washington researchers, students, and community partners who are developing innovative solutions to pressing environmental challenges with a focus on climate change and its intersection with social justice, a strategic priority for EARTHLAB.

Duties for the Temporary EARTHLAB Innovation Grants Specialist will include:

• Lead the release of the Innovation Grants Program Request for Proposals and the grant application, review and selection processes for “3rd Cohort”
• Work closely with the EARTHLAB Executive Director and Communications Lead to coordinate the launch of the Request for Proposals and the announcement of new grantees, as well as to update the website as needed
• Lead virtual and in-person Information Sessions both on and off-campus for University of Washington faculty, students and staff and community organizations
• Hold regular “office hours” during the grant application process
• Support existing grantee teams, including UW researchers, students, and staff, in the administration of their Innovation grants
• Work closely with EARTHLAB’s Administrator to oversee the grant budgets and ensure compliance with University policies and procedures
• Oversee the reporting and close-out process for “2nd Cohort” of Innovation grantees
• Support opportunities for public outreach to highlight EARTHLAB grant-funded activities and achievements. This may entail creating summaries of impact in conjunction with the EARTHLAB Communications Lead and the College of the Environment Advancement team.
• Develop a resource list on climate change, climate mitigation, climate justice, and community engagement resources (including academic literature and community-generated reports, for example) for the incoming 2022 grantee cohort

Position Qualifications:

Required:

• Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a environmentally-related discipline
• 4 years of professional experience related to grant coordination/management or grant programs, program coordination, program administration, or operations management
• Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment
• Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and manage competing priorities and deadlines using strong organizational skills
• Excellent office computer skills to include MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive and a willingness to learn other applications/programs as necessary

Desired:

• Experience working in climate justice or environmental work
• Experience with community engagement and/or community-based participatory research

Equivalent education and experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as a license, certification, or registration.

Diversity Equity and Inclusion:

EARTHLAB acknowledges the systemic racism that exists in the environmental sector and within environmentalism. We believe every member on our team enriches our diversity by exposing us to a broad range of ways to understand and engage with the world, identify challenges, and to discover, design and deliver solutions. We are seeking candidates who are committed to creating an equitable, diverse and inclusive work environment where all voices are considered and valued.

Application Process: The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.  These assessments may include Work Authorization, Cover Letter, and/or others.  Any assessments that you need to complete will appear on your screen as soon as you select “Apply to this position”.
