Position Description

The Seattle Department of Construction and Inspections (SDCI) has outstanding opportunities for Land Use Planner I’s to join our zoning review team in the department’s Land Use Division.  
 
 Planners on the zoning review team work in a fast-paced, production-focused and supportive environment in the department’s Applicant Services Center and review development projects and platting applications for compliance with a range of land use regulations, including zoning, shoreline, urban design, and environmental standards. Planners on this team also offer land use information to the public and provide technical support services to other City agencies.  This position reports to the team’s zoning supervisors.

Job Responsibilities

  • Review development proposals, including platting actions, for compliance with Seattle’s land use code and other land use and environmental regulations 
  • Review and examine land use and construction permit applications for compliance with development standards that include use, bulk and siting of structures, landscaping, tree protection, and adherence to Mandatory Housing Affordability. 
  • Conduct discretionary review, analysis, and preparation of written land use decisions, primarily for platting actions. 
  • In person and in writing, provide information to the public, department associates, City agencies, and other jurisdictions about Seattle’s land use regulations. 
  • Interpret and apply knowledge of municipal codes and policies governing urban, environmental, urban design, and land use. 
  • Screen permit applications for proposed development, to facilitate complete information for subsequent review. 
  • Coordinate across agencies and City departments to facilitate project review. 

Qualifications

Requires a bachelor’s degree in urban design, urban planning, environmental studies, law, architecture, building construction technology, or a closely related field. (Combinations of education, training and/or experience which provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class will be considered. Relevant experience may include land use, housing or environmental policy or regulatory program development; and/or experience in the review and analysis of new land use developments, administration of land use or environmental regulatory programs or code interpretation.)
