Recreational Tree Climbing Guide at Deception Pass State Park

Do you love the outdoors, teaching people, sharing unique experience, talking about ecology, and have an eye for safety? Then a recreational tree climbing guide might be opportunity for you! We are looking for a guide to teach participants how to climb up giant old-growth trees around 250ft high at Deception Pass State Park. AdventureTerra contracts with the state park to run climbing classes and experiences. Not necessary but preferred candidates will have some type of climbing experience and/or guiding experience, 1-2 years with certificate. All candidates will require a certain amount of training that is provided free. AdventureTerra will even train select great matching candidates with no experience in a free 1 to 2 week course, at its discretion.

We need someone who can provide tree climbing instruction and guidance in a fun, educational, enthusiastic, and safe environment.

Schedule:

Season is from March till end of October. Will be part-time, and full time opportunity May-September if interested. We have two groups going a day, 9am – 1pm, and 1pm – 5pm. Shifts start and end about half-hour before and after the group(s).

Ideal Candidates will have:

-Impeccable safety record

–A positive/optimistic personality

-Leadership and teaching skills

-CPR/First Aid Training or be able to obtain certification, will reimburse

– The ability to be very comfortable and relaxed at heights +200 feet

-Climbing experience

Preferred Qualifications:

-certificate from a climbing organization, AMGA, NOLS, PCIA, Arborist, etc

-Rescue training, (WFR or WAFA preferred but not necessary)

Must Have Qualifications:

-Your own transportation and car

-Complete an in-person climbing interview.

-Be able to pass a climbing test, after training.

-Valid Driver License

-Be able to pass state park background check

What you will do and Responsibilities:

-Having awesome customer service

-Guide mixed adult/kids’ groups up multiple trees with a single rope technique ascending system, using ascenders and foot loops. Rarely lead groups as large as 8 people.

-Leading kid camps/groups with 4-6 kids

-Explain and demonstrate climbing equipment and techniques

-Supervise to ensure safety procedures are adhered to

-Rappeling

-Enforcing safety standards

-Great communication skills

-Must be good with all ages and personality types

-Belaying

-Good under pressure

-Switching out customers equipment

-Fitting people with gear

-Eating Lunch in Trees

-Giving safety talks

-Problem solving
