Job Summary

Sustainability is a core value at Bowdoin that is seen in operational decision-making all across campus. The Bowdoin College Office of Sustainability is seeking a Sustainability Outreach and Programs Manager to direct the office’s student facing programs as well as other engagement programming with faculty, staff, and the general public. The position uses a wide range of communication channels to both inform and engage the Bowdoin community in the sustainability efforts, challenges, and opportunities across campus. Supervising a large student cohort each year, the manager helps facilitate success for Bowdoin students who are dedicated to sustainability outreach and programming. Programming is centered around campus goals and projects that intersect with the economic, social and environmental themes of sustainability.

The sustainability outreach and programs manager is responsible for recruitment, coordination, and training of the student “EcoRep” program and Green Office Certification program. This position assists the Associate Director in other student led-initiatives, communication of Bowdoin’s sustainability initiatives and Carbon Neutrality Plan, updates to the College’s sustainability databases and the sustainability website. This individual will also support the College’s Sustainability Implementation Committee. Projects and program implementation are typically aimed at informing and inspiring sustainability practices in student residences, as well as academic, athletic and administrative offices. Assist in verifying and reporting the effectiveness of these programs as they related to the economic, social and environmental goals of the college.

Education/Skills Requirements

Required: A Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) with coursework in environmental studies, or a related field and have a fundamental understanding (either through coursework and/or practical work experience) of higher education sustainability issues and opportunities. A minimum of three years of experience with higher education or equivalent sustainability programs is required. Supervisory experience is preferred.

The applicant must be able to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals; excellent organizational skills and the ability to prepare agendas and meeting minutes, manage multiple tasks and prioritize work; proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, presentation skills, and database software; self-directed with the ability to motivate others.

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to think strategically and problem solve are essential attributes of the successful candidate. A deep enthusiasm for mentoring and supervising college students on a variety of projects as they explore the broad field of sustainability and contribute to the sustainability culture on campus.

Experience Requirements and/or Equivalents

A minimum of two years of experience with college/university or equivalent sustainability programs is required. Communications experience and supervisory experience are strongly preferred.
