Wild Whatcom seeks a Development and Outreach Manager to work closely with the Executive Director on fundraising, marketing, and outreach. The Manager’s responsibilities include coordinating and overseeing a range of fundraising efforts from grant writing and foundation prospecting to donor engagement and business sponsor solicitation. With support from the Executive Director, the Manager will also be responsible for drafting and implementing an outreach and marketing strategy that reflects our values and vision and working to augment our positive presence in the community through outreach and social media. The Manager will be an integral part of the broader Wild Whatcom team and help support our overall mission of fostering a lifelong connection with nature and community.

This position reports directly to the Executive Director and is a year-round, full-time position. The Development and Outreach Manager compensation will be dependent on experience, ranging from $40,000-$45,000 per year.

Responsibilities:

This role will be a part of a fundraising, development and outreach team, which includes our Executive Director, Operations Director, Program Director, and Board of Directors (including a fundraising committee), among others. This individual will help manage the below-mentioned tasks with support and thought partnership from the fundraising team. 

  • Grow and manage a donor portfolio by prospecting for new donors, helping track our calendar of donor outreach, drafting donor emails, and setting up personal visits with donors, which may include our Executive Director and/or Board members.
  • Seek out, draft, and gather all necessary materials for grant applications and work with the Executive Director to develop and foster additional foundation relationships.
  • Support the implementation of giving campaigns, such as our annual appeal, by prospecting for and soliciting new matching donors, drafting content, and keeping track of deadlines.
  • Develop and manage a cohesive digital media presence that aligns with our organizational values and spirit, including maintaining current social media outlets (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, and bi-monthly e-newsletter).
  • Manage and track external communications to ensure consistency in branding, language, and content delivered to the wider community.
  • Work with the Executive Director to produce communication and donor cultivation materials, such as donor updates, newsletters, handouts, presentation slides, etc.
  • Organize outreach opportunities and represent the organization at outreach events, including public speaking events, engaging with the public at tabling events, etc. as needed.
  • Support the development of our fundraising event strategy in conjunction with the Executive Director and Board Fundraising Committee (currently we are not organizing fundraising events, but may begin to incorporate them).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Flexibility, creativity, a sense of humor, and eagerness to learn and grow.
  • 3+ years experience in a leadership role that included fundraising, donor development, and/or marketing, preferably in a non-profit setting.
  • Ability to energetically and accurately represent Wild Whatcom to a variety of constituents including donors, community partners, foundations, parents, and other organizations.
  • Range of development experience, which may include: donor cultivation, securing individual and business donations, online giving, organizing appeals, strategic fundraising planning, capital campaigns, estate-giving, and/or event planning.
  • Experience with a variety of marketing and outreach initiatives, which may include: print/digital advertisement creation, creation of print materials for outreach purposes, social media campaigns, digital newsletters, and/or participating at tabling events.
  • Budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and reporting preferable.
  • Superior interpersonal, public, and written communication skills, with an ability to quickly build rapport in person, as well as through phone conversations and personal correspondence.
  • Ability to collaborate with a diverse array of people, including board, staff, community partners, foundations, and volunteers.
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and handle multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ease and comfort using Google systems, Microsoft Office Suite, social media and graphic design platforms (e.g. Canva) or a willingness to learn.
