POINT DEFIANCE ZOO & AQUARIUM
Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is the only combined zoo and aquarium in the Pacific Northwest. The 29-acre zoological park was established in 1905, and attracts over 800,000 visitors a year. It is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA), which ensure rigorously high standards of animal welfare, veterinary care, conservation, education and more. POSITION INFORMATION
Under the direction of the assigned Curator, perform a variety of skilled duties involved in the care, observation, maintenance, propagation and management of American red wolves at PDZA’s off-site propagation facility. This facility is located in Eatonville, WA and is not open to the public. There is no public interaction within this position. American red wolves are a USFWS recovery species and are managed under human care in a manner that prepares them to be behaviorally suitable for successful reintroduction to the wild. To the extent possible, human socialization and familiarization (including behavioral management via training) of the wolves is minimized to avoid adaptation to human care. The facility is managed with a small team of keepers, which requires utmost teamwork, trust, and communication.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Three years of experience involving the care and husbandry of animals in a zoo, aquarium, theme park or related environment, preferably in an AZA accredited facility required. Bachelor’s degree in biology, zoology or related field preferred.

LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Washington driver’s license.
  • Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR Card within the probationary period.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid scuba diving certification when assigned to the aquarium.

This position is a represented position with the International Union of Operating Engineers.
