The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Northwest Region. Are you interested in a career that allows you to serve local communities by leading/mentoring natural resource professionals and technicians in support of the “Forest Practices” program. This program implements the “Forest Practices Act,” and “Timber/fish/Wildlife” agreement. The goals of both the act and agreement are to protect natural resources such as water quality and fish and wildlife habitat while simultaneously maintaining a viable forest products industry. These duties involve reviewing and processing forest practices applications in collaboration with other state agencies and Indian Tribes. The position involves mostly office work, with occasional field visits.

Duties

Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge in personnel management principles and merit system rules, and employee union agreements
  • Knowledge of agency policies, practices and procedures
  • Skills in oral and written communication
  • Skills in staff month and dollar budget development
  • Skills in assessing training needs
  • Skills in agreement and contract negotiations
  • Key Knowledge and Skills, Forestry:
  • Know ledger of Forest Practices Act and Rules.
  • General Forestry, Wildlife, and Wildlife knowledge. Knowledge of local timber harvest and forest road construction practices.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelors or associate degree in forestry or similar natural resources degree.
  • Two years of experience as a Natural Resources Specialist 3 in a forestry field or three years of paraprofessional experience in regulatory programs involving forestry.
  • Professional working knowledge of Forest Practices Rules and Forest Practices Board Manual.
  • Demonstrated ability communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated ability providing outstanding customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability working effectively as part of a team.
  • Use computer skills involving managing office data and corresponding to multiple customers including staff, landowners, agencies, and Tribes.
  • This position is mainly an office position with occasional need to work outdoors in rugged terrain and inclement weather. Position has occasional contact with angry and/or distraught customers and stakeholders.
  • This position requires occasional overnight travel of approximately 5 times per year.

Our ideal candidate will also have the qualifications listed below:

  • A bachelor’s degree in forestry or related natural resources field and three years of professional experience working with regulatory programs in the forestry sector
  • Experience implementing Washington’s Forest and Fish Rules.
  • Two years experience implementing rules as a DNR Forest Practices Forester.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience coordinating and facilitating public meetings.
  • Experience analyzing complex documents for compliance with rules/laws.

World-class outdoor recreation opportuinites abound in the area. The main entrance to North Cascades National Park is only 1 hr drive to the east. The San Juan Islands can be accessed from Anacortes, just a 45 minute drive to the west. Additional recreation opportunities can be found in the surrounding Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest and state forest trust lands.
