The Department of Forestry has one permanent, full-time position available in the State Forests Division. This position is part of a remote team and can be based in either the North Coast (Astoria or Tillamook) or the Mid-Willamette Valley (Salem or West Oregon) regions of Oregon.

What Will You Do

You will coordinate, develop, implement and monitor reforestation and young stand silviculture activities across the State Forest Division. You will work with the Seedling and Young Stand Silviculture coordinator to update the reforestation policy and procedures manual and to help implement universal standards across the division. You will be a part of the yearly planning process and will collaboratively determine the needs of each district and to help coordinate contracted services and the sharing of resources across districts. You will help create and implement universal data collection, management, and storage. You will use best available science and adaptive management to improve business practices. You will work with Resource Specialists as needed to ensure environmental and conservation goals are being met while ensuring reforestation success. The position will help produce reports on reforestation activities and accomplishments.          

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

  • Strong background in reforestation methods and plantation maintenance including experience in conducting/coordinating stocking surveys, planting inspections, herbicide applications, seedling evaluations, and pre-commercial thinning operations.
  • Working knowledge of forest management technology and recommended best management practices.
  • College-level training in a natural resource management discipline or enough work experience to provide equivalent knowledge.
  • Experience with long range planning and annual operations planning for harvesting, reforestation, and/or other management activities.
  • Experience administering forestry related contracts.
  • Experience in computers and GIS (includes software such as ESRI GIS) and Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Access and Outlook).
  • Ability to be highly motivated, working independently and efficiently on multiple tasks and issues.
  • Experience working within a team providing coordination and leadership in a field environment.
  • Ability to interpret technical information, analyze and evaluate data for the implementation of land management activities and skilled in writing technical reports.
  • Two years of experience in Forestry or closely related natural resource program AND a Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or closely related degree, or three additional years of related (pertinent) experience; OR One year of experience in Forestry or closely related natural resource program AND a Master’s OR Doctorate degree in Forestry or closely related degree.

Because the Department’s highest priority work is a forest fire emergency, this position may be utilized during those emergencies to provide assistance in a variety of ways.  That assistance may be directly aiding the emergency effort in the field or at the Salem headquarters.  It also may be in providing backup to fill in for another position that is being used in direct aid to the emergency, or it may be in performing an essential function in some capacity either within this Program or elsewhere in Salem or in the field.
