Are you interested in working outdoors and applying your skills in a variety of activities involving farming, wildlife habitat development, and maintaining facilities and equipment? What you will do:

• Perform a variety of farming activities including: plowing, disking, harrowing and seeding of waterfowl forage areas; operating tractors and mowers; and spraying vegetation by applying herbicides using power and hand sprayers. Participate in habitat development and wildlife status trends by conducting surveys and implementing habitat development plans. Haul and spread dirt, rocks, and gravel, using a dump truck. Use of a road grader, backhoe, and crawler tractor to construct and repair roads. Install, remove, clean out, and repair cattle guards;

• Assist the Fish and Technician Senior with work of seasonal, and temporary employees as well as volunteers in the management activities within the west side units such as: road and parking lot maintenance; ensuring that the area is adequately posted with wildlife area regulation and directional signs; litter is picked up; maintenance and construction of fences, gates, trails, foot bridges and nest structures; and maintain and repair water control systems which includes pumps, ditches, water control valves, and dikes.

• Issue daily permits to hunters, check hunter bag and identify sex, age, species of harvested waterfowl, records hunter data. Answer public information requests in person and by phone. Check hunters’ license stamps, permits, and report violations to the Oregon State Police or Columbia County Deputy. Patrol area by foot and vehicle to ensure compliance with wildlife area regulations and gather harvest data during hunting seasons. Perform preventive and corrective repairs using hand tools as well as power equipment on buildings, equipment and grounds as needed

Working Conditions
• The employee in this position is required to live on station as a condition of employment (unless state housing is not available). The employee must be available to respond to emergency situations.

• Frequently required to work outside during inclement weather, long hours, before sunrise and after sunset, on weekends, and irregular (flexible) work schedules.

• Requires lifting heavy objects of 50 pounds (or more with assistance if/when necessary).

• Working with the public, local residents, and other agency personnel are frequent and a well-developed sense of diplomacy is necessary.

• This position requires the possession of a Class A Commercial Driver License (CDL). On your application, be sure to indicate in the Job History section if you have a CDL. If the selected applicant does not possess a CDL, they are required to obtain this license within six months of hire and must retain it as a condition of continued employment in this position. The department will pay for up to $100 toward the cost of the CDL exam and renewal reimbursement. The cost of the physical exam would be covered if the employee is enrolled in PEBB for medical insurance. Pursuant to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and Federal Highway Administration regulations, candidates must successfully pass an alcohol/controlled substance test before being hired into this position. Additionally, employees required to hold a CDL will be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up alcohol/controlled substance testing as a condition of employment.

• This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com; an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/; and possession of a Public Pesticide Applicator’s License (PPAL). If the selected applicant does not possess these certifications, they must obtain within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.

• This position requires occasional use of a firearm to deliver immobilization drugs and projecting nets for wildlife capture, euthanizing injured or sick wildlife, killing or hazing nuisance animals or birds, collecting animals for research or other studies, and protection from dangerous animals in close quarters.

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

• An Associate’s degree in Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR

• Eighteen months of experience in the care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming. (six months of fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Wildlife Science, Agriculture, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree.
