Job Summary

Bellevue Parks & Community Services maintains over 2,700 acres of parks and open space land and over 80 miles of trails. The department also provides recreation programs for over 10,000 participants each year.

We are seeking an individual that has a passion to provide a wide variety of recreational sports and fitness programs to a diverse population of children, youth and teens and offers children their first introduction to traditional and non-traditional team sports, individual sports, and fitness/wellness skills.  This individual must engage with patrons of all ages and backgrounds, possess good computer technology skills, be detail orientated and willing to work a schedule that includes evenings and weekends.  Experience in the development and delivery of sports, fitness, recreation programs and events is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops, plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates a wide range of traditional and non-traditional youth sports and fitness programs and youth and family-related events.
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers, program staff, instructors and contractors involved in programs.
  • Conducts research to stay current on recreation program development and management.
  • Assists with the development, recommendation and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Develops and monitors program and/or facility budgets, tracks revenue and expenditures; assists in writing and monitoring grants, prepares, funding requests and miscellaneous proposals.
  • Works with program supervisor and department team to develop marketing strategies and promotional materials.
  • Drafts memos, briefs, contracts, coaches training manuals, sports clinic and league lesson plans, event plans, class and camp curriculums, and other written documents and correspondence as needed.
  • Interacts and collaborates with other service providers, sponsors, program partners and City personnel on identified projects and programs.
  • Performs office duties including answering the phone, registering participants, copying, completing forms, and providing customer service, as needed.
  • Performs light custodial duties including room set-up/break-down, cleaning equipment, vacuuming, sweeping, and other similar type duties, as needed

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

  • Works under the general supervision of the Youth Health Fitness Community Services Supervisor
  • Exercises supervision over temporary/seasonal employees, volunteers, contractors, and support staff, as assigned.
  • Acts as lead staff as necessary to provide support to assigned programs including but not limited to non-school day camps, after-school programs and other programs and services directly supervised by this position.
  • Support other programs in work group and department by intermittently assisting staff to support programs and events.
Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in Recreation Management or very closely related field(s).
  • Four or more years of progressively responsible related experience in human/social services, programming recreation activities or a related area.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • First Aid and CPR, Occupational Blood Born Pathogens and Defensive Driving certification preferred. Must obtain within 3 months of hire if not already certified.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of public sector organization and program operations; knowledge of recreation program and event management, including planning, scheduling, monitoring, and problem solving; knowledge of the methods and procedures of budget development and control; knowledge of City regulations, risk management and liability relevant to the program area as well as departmental policies and procedures.
  • Experience in recreation program development, specifically in the area of sports and fitness/wellness program and event coordination.
  • Must have strong business and entrepreneurial skills with knowledge of producing profitable, cost effective programs and services.
  • Must have strong knowledge of and verification of providing safe programs to a wide variety of youth and teen populations.
  • Ability to relate and work with a diverse range of program participants, skilled in conflict resolution and excellent customer service.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures to ambiguous situations; Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Ability to supervise the work of staff including coordinating, assigning, monitoring, and evaluating work, hiring, training, motivating and disciplining staff.
  • Ability to respond and effectively handle program related incidents and emergencies while following city protocol and policies.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare budgets, determine program fees, develop schedules, write reports, procedures manuals and correspondence.
  • Knowledge of databases, spreadsheet, registration, and scheduling programs utilized by the City.
  • Knowledge of applicable information technology relative to service area.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with department recreation staff and partnership organizations.
  • Knowledge of recreation site management, including operations and maintenance.
