Job Summary

Responsible for supporting the health and wellbeing of the farm animals. Work involves performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled related tasks in accordance with specific instructions in site maintenance and care of animals. Responsibility includes providing a safe environment for all participants and assists with support of farm themed programs. The job is done in a public setting. 

Hours: Available to work between 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on various weekends (Sat/Sun) and some holidays with occasional weekdays as needed. Schedules are created on a month to month basis. 
 
Minimum age: 18 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 Attend to all farm animals’ daily care.

  • Clean stalls, pens and assorted other animal housing and equipment.
  • Turn out to pastures and pens daily.
  • Feed, groom and handle farm animals.
  • Tend to animals’ special health needs.
  • Adhere to basic safety and security standards.
  • Record animal information as needed. 

Safely operates farm vehicles. 
Overall site and supply upkeep.

  • Monitor feed & supplies and report needs.
  • Clean and organize storage area.
  • Perform defined site maintenance tasks. 

Basic interaction with the public/visitors.

  • Provide basic customer service to visitors and participants.
  • Assist with tours and programs as directed.

Prepare animal for program use including training, grooming and moving to needed location.

  • Handle animals during program/tour.
  • Activity preparation as directed.
  • Respond quickly and appropriately to various situations at the farm. 

Makes basic decisions and carries through with minimal direction from supervisor.
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned by supervisor. 

Qualifications
  • Previous experience with farm or domestic animal care beneficial. 
  • Comfortable to work with large farm animals such as cows and horses and smaller farm animals such as goats, sheep, rabbits, poultry, ducks and geese. 
  • Able to work in a farm environment around hay, grasses, dust, pollen, fur, feathers and animal feces. 
  •  Must be enthusiastic, energetic, reliable, trustworthy and willing to put forth a good effort. 
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision. 
  • Ability to multi-task. 
  • Good customer service skills and ability to address the public in a courteous manner. 
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional hours, including weekends, and holidays. 
  • Candidate must pass criminal background check prior to being hired.

Physical Demands:

  • Work involves walking on uneven surfaces, talking, hearing, using hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. 
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. 
  • May require strenuous activity. 
  • The employee may be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 50 pounds. 
  • Work will require employee to climb, balance, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. 
  • Employee must be willing and able to work outside in all weather conditions. 
  • The noise level in the work environment varies from rather quiet to moderately loud.

This is a Variable, non-exempt, non-union position.

Definition of a Variable Employee:  
•Average weekly hours cannot be determined at date of hire.
•Hours may vary from week to week and are anticipated to be 28 hours per week or less.
•NOTE: Will be considered full-time and eligible for medical coverage if hours average 30 hours per week or more over a 12-month measurement period (or 130 hours per month).
