The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has an exciting opportunity within our Olympic Region. We are actively seeking a Forest Crew Supervisor – Correctional Facility at the Olympic Camp. The duty station is in at Olympic Corrections Center, approximately 27 miles south of Forks, WA. Outdoor recreational activities here are plentiful and include fishing,  hunting, cycling, mountain biking, and hiking, skiing and snowboarding, to name only a few.  Mountains and the coast are here for you to explore.

This entry-level position supports the activities at the Olympic Camp. Duties of this position include supervision of up to ten adult offenders performing pre-commercial thinning, tree planting, litter pick-up, wildland fire suppression, forest road maintenance, recreation site maintenance, and other forestry related jobs.  The primary emphasis will be on leadership of the crew, providing for crew and public safety while leading and training an offender forestry crew. Travel is required during fire season and other emergency response.

Duties

Responsibilities:
This position requires constant decision making regarding the crew’s safety. It also requires decisions with regard to crew placement and may require the Forest Crew Supervisor to make decisions regarding the quality of the work being performed. In general, decisions are made continually regarding the motivation and cohesiveness of the offender crew members.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • 18 months Forestry related work experience (ex. logging, chainsaw operation, wildland fire
    suppression, pre-commercial thinning, tree planting, etc.).
  • 6 months of lead work experience.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated by the ability
    to resolve conflicts, write effectively, and communicate with diverse groups both internal and
    external. Must be able to diffuse or respond to offender conflicts between peers and others.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must pass a Criminal Justice Records Check. Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of this position, BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS will be conducted on successful candidates.
  • Successful candidate will be required to meet physical fitness standards for arduous level wildfire suppression work. This requires passing a work capacity test by completing, within 45 minutes, a 3-mile hike carrying a 45-pound pack. Supervised tests are administered by the Department of Natural Resources. Offers of employment are contingent on passing the arduous level pack test. If hired before passing the pack test, failure to pass the test would result in termination of probationary employment. (For promotional candidates, failure would result in reversion from trial service employment.)
  • Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Approximately 85% of the work performed outdoors and in remote areas. The ability to perform arduous work while traversing steep, rugged terrain under a full spectrum of environmental conditions is necessary. Duties include, but may not be limited to, lifting more than fifty pounds, running, bending, twisting, walking, and climbing.
  • No tobacco or smoking is permitted in State vehicles, at the work site, or in the
    presence of offenders.
  • The incumbent in this position is required to travel. Travel outside the region for training sessions, fire response, special projects and daily work could require long drives and long shifts, over extended periods of time. This includes work on weekends in the wildfire environment. The employee is eligible for per diem for meals and lodging costs when in travel status, except when provided.
  • A valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Finalists and/or interview candidates may be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.

Our ideal candidate will also have the qualifications listed below:

  • Knowledge of: Wildland fire suppression; Forest data collection; Natural resource management methods, practices, and techniques; Recreation use and management; Use of equipment and tools; Maintaining safe working conditions in outdoor work environments and Supervision of adult offenders.
  • Work experience that demonstrates: Leadership skills; Conflict resolution; Interpersonal communication skills and Professionalism.
  • Experience in: Wildland fire suppression; Silvicultural work (ex. tree planting, vegetation management, and precommercial thinning; Recreation trail and facilities construction
    and maintenance; Operating a vehicle on forest roads; Microsoft Suite and Supervision of adult offenders.
  • Technical / Professional knowledge, skills, and licenses: Current pesticide applicator license in
    Washington State including Laws and Safety, Right of Way, Agricultural Weed, and Aquatics endorsments (or the ability of obtain); Red Card Qualification of any Single Resource Boss, (preferably Crew Boss) and A 2 or 4 year college level course of study in natural resources, fire science, or other applicable feild.
