Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland (SPF)

Position Description

Position:                      Communications and Development Director

Classification:            Salaried Exempt 40 hours/week

Compensation:           $50,000 – $60,000 annually, plus benefits

Reports to:                 Executive Director

Purpose of Position:

This position will have primary responsibility for creating and implementing a comprehensive development and communications plan that includes strategies for maximizing sources of income; effectively promoting Skagitonians to Preserve Farmland’s events and programs; and enhancing SPF’s profile with local, regional and national audiences.

Working Conditions:

  • Works in a typical office setting and requires long periods of sitting, typing and facing a computer monitor.  Occasionally called upon to work overtime, odd schedules or out of the office.  Occasional lifting of boxes up to 50lbs.  Occasional work outdoors in hot sun or cold and rainy weather along with walking in fields that may contain uneven ground and/or mud
  • Position is for 40 hours per week.  The SPF Office is open from 9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.  Occasional evening/weekend work is required
Role Responsibilities:

Job Responsibilities:

Working closely with the Executive Director, staff and the appropriate committees of the Board of Directors, the Communications and Development Director will:

Communications (35%)

  • Design and implement an effective communications strategy based on target audiences.
  • Develop brand voice and maintain brand integrity across all platforms.
  • Design and implement creative and effective communication and marketing campaigns to support SPF’s mission and goals.
  • Assist in the creation of digital, video, audio and print content with a focus on SPF membership growth, retention and telling SPF’s story.
  • Track engagement across various platforms and make data-driven decisions.
  • Seek opportunities to enhance the reputation of the brand, and coordinate publicity events as required.

Development & Fundraising (35%)

  • Grant writing:
    • With strong written communication skills, manage current grant contracts, identify and secure new grant funding opportunities and complete all necessary grant reports as required.
  • Donor cultivation and stewardship:
    • Plan and implement donor stewardship activities and relationship-building opportunities with donors with the goal of sustaining and growing membership contributions
  • Organizational Marketing & Membership:
    • With a focus on growth, retention and engagement, implement SPF membership-related fundraising & marketing activities, including the development of all written fundraising appeals, activities & communications.
  • Special event planning:
    • Assist in coordinating, managing and executing logistics involved for the organization’s two community events – Harvest Dinner & Auction and “Our Valley, Our Future” Breakfast, and other events, as needed.

Outreach & Education (20%)

  • Grow and manage SPF community outreach efforts (tabling, affiliate group presentations, etc) in both Skagit County and the greater Puget Sound region.
  • Recruit, train and manage volunteers for various SPF outreach and education activities
  • Assist Executive Director with identifying opportunities and executing logistics for community forums and panels.
  • Plan, implement and execute SPF outreach & education programs
    • Youth InFARMation Program:  Farm Tours and Talking Fields
    • SPF Spring Farm Tour
    • Crop ID Sign programs to remain updated with relevant, seasonal information

Operations (10%)

  • Database and record management:
    • Work with and assist staff with data entry and generating reports in SPF’s CRM software (Donor Perfect) and Auction Management software (Auction Tracker).
  • Budgeting:
    • Assist with the development of the annual operating budget, under the direction of the Executive Director
  • Reporting:
    • Prepare regular development reports for board and staff, including updates on fundraising goals, strategies, etc.

Other Duties as Assigned

  • Special projects, assignments and meetings may be assigned/required from time to time.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise contractors, employees, part-time employees and/or volunteers as required/needed.
Candidate Qualifications:

Qualifications Required:

  • Willingness to understand and support SPF’s mission
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be a team player working in a team environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, content management systems, and social media platforms.
  • Knowledge of social media publishing software (Hootsuite, Constant Contact, Creator Studio, etc.).
  • Demonstration of excellent written and verbal communication skills; attention to detail and accuracy; ability to multi-task in dynamic, fast-paced, environment; team player with  strong organizational skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2 – 5 years’ relevant experience in a communications role.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with all levels of staff, board, donors, volunteers, public
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule and overtime as necessary
  • Ability to prioritize and manage competing requests
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License

Qualifications Preferred (but not required):

  • Working knowledge of Adobe products such as Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.
  • Proficiency in Squarespace web design, content management and editing.
  • Two to five years non-profit experience.
