SMALL GAME, FURBEARER & RESIDENT GAME BIRD
Olympia, Washington
Anticipated Appointment Length: 3.5 Months

Picture yourself providing support for statewide management of beavers, wild turkeys, small game, furbearers, and upland game bird species.

This is an opportunity to assist with implementing the beaver relocation permitting program and with resident game bird outreach, education, and management.

Duties

Our Fish & Wildlife Biologist 1,

  • Assists with the furbearer management program, including the implementation and review of the beaver relocation permitting program.
  • Helps coordinate and implement the beaver relocation training, updates materials and collaborates with other agencies and stakeholders.
  • Assists with permit processing, coordinating facility inspections, data management, data analysis, and summary report writing.
  • Responds to inquiries from permittees and the public about the program.
  • Assist with other tasks associated with furbearer, which includes harvest data management, harvest summary statistics, report writing, and implementation of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) bobcat and river otter pelt sealing program.
  • Performs records management
  • Assists with the resident game bird management program and provides support for other game bird related tasks.
  • Collaborates with partners and other staff to develop information and outreach strategies and materials, including webpage updates.
  • Helps with the development of a game bird observation reporting app.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Work is performed primarily in an office setting with potential for occasional work outside.
    2. Outdoor work includes working in all weather conditions, rugged terrain, walking, carrying 30 lbs. of gear, exposure to insects and animals.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Overnight travel may be required on a rare occasion.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Computers, tablets, smart phones and standard vehicles for travel.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Customer interactions will occur with both internal and external customers.
    2. Interaction may occur through written and verbal correspondence, including telephone, email, and in-person (following social distancing) guidelines.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, environmental science, or related field.

AND

  • One (1) year of professional experience conducting wildlife work.

Please Note: Professional equivalent experience may substitute, year for year, for education requirement.   

Knowledge of: 

  • General methods of wildlife management.

Experience with:

  • Microsoft Office programs and personal computers.
  • Familiarity within Windows-driven computer programs.

Ability To: 

  • Meet productivity standards, deadlines, and work schedules.
  • Work independently maintaining a high quality of work.
  • Be punctual and perform in a dependable manner.
  • Ability to convey ideas and facts orally and in writing.

Licenses:

  • A valid Washington State Driver’s License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree in wildlife management, wildlife biology, or wildlife ecology; with emphasis on furbearers or resident game birds.

Knowledge of: 

  • Beaver and resident game bird ecology, biology, and behavior.
  • Beaver capture and handling techniques.
  • Familiarity with furbearer trapping and management, including the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) program.

Experience with: 

  • Beaver relocation and resident game bird hunting.
  • Work experience and geographic familiarity with areas currently occupied by beaver and game birds in Washington.
  • Teaching or training diverse participants.
  • Working with public engagement, outreach, and education.

Skills/Abilities: 

  • Organization, attention to detail.
  • ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and Survey123.
  • Ability to partner with staff, supervisors and collaborators to identify and resolve complex or sensitive issues.
