Duties

Working under general supervision with the Region 6 Warmwater Enhancement Program Team Lead Biologist 3, this position organizes and conducts detailed biological, creel, habitat, and research surveys on Washington waters. This position is primarily responsible for field work and implementation of Warmwater Enhancement projects in Region 6, while also providing additional support to the broader Warmwater Enhancement Team across the state. The position duties will include the occasional supervision of volunteers to accomplish project objectives. Data collected by the Warmwater Enhancement Program team provides the science upon which District, Regional, and Program Management Biologists base fisheries management decisions.

 

Conducts detailed biological, creel and habitat surveys on Washington waters managed for warmwater and mixed species fisheries.  

Tasks include: 

  • Electrofishing and netting surveys for walleye, tiger muskie, and other warmwater fish species.
  • Predator diet analysis; tracking fish movement and habitat use; limnological studies: and Implements angler creel surveys for selected warmwater and mixed species fisheries and prepares associated catch estimates.

Communicating both orally and in writing to senior staff and the public regarding project purpose and results. 

Tasks include: 

  • Data entry and analysis; drafting data summaries and technical reports; developing management recommendations; preparing presentation of results.

Technical analysis of data, reporting results, and formulating management recommendations. 

Tasks include: 

  • Study and statistical design; evaluation and analyzing data using appropriate statistical methods.

Assists in specialized management related tasks.  

Tasks include: 

  • Rehabilitations, regulation assessment, population estimates, broodstock capture, and habitat manipulation.

 May direct activities of seasonal Scientific Technicians and/or volunteer staff on data collection activities.                                                                                                                                            

Tasks include: 

  • Directs occasional scientific technician staff and volunteers.

 Equipment maintenance.

Tasks include: 

  • Managing sampling gear.

Other duties as assigned. 

Tasks include: 

  • As needed other work pertaining to WDFW’s core mission will be assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Work Setting, including hazards:   

  • Work may involve long hours in varying, sometimes remote, locations day or night, and occasionally on weekends, in all types of weather.
  • Work indoors in an office setting, as well as outdoors, as required by the assorted duties of the position.
  • Requires ability to manage sampling gear, which can require repetitive lifting of up to 50 pounds with or without assistance.

Schedule:   

  • Monday-Friday 8-5.   Two field seasons will also include evening work (6pm to past midnight), and occasional weekends.

Travel Requirements: 

  • Overnight travel of up to 5-days required at times

Tools and Equipment: 

  • Boats, nets, electrofishing equipment, trailers, computers, hand tools, pumps, microscopes, water quality meters.

License:

  • A Valid unrestricted driver’s license.
  • Must complete required motorboat operation training within the first year of employment.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science, or environmental science or related a related field.

AND

  • One year of professional experience in fish/ wildlife/ habitat management or research.

OR 

  • A Master’s degree or a PH.D. degree in the applicable science will substitute for one year of the required experience.

 

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in biology, Fish Management, Natural Resources, or Environmental Science.

Knowledge of:

  • Biologist in this position must have at least 1 year of practical experience in warmwater fish management or research.
  • Experience with GIS and R or similar statistical program
  • Relevant experience with warmwater fish species and populations.
  • Experience identifying regionally applicable species of resident fish including juvenile life stages.
  • Experience conducting study design, implementation, and reporting.
  • Basic statistical analysis experience.
  • Technical writing experience.
  • Experience with equipment and techniques commonly used to capture all life stages of resident fish.
  • Experience directly supervising seasonal field staff.
  • Experience operating 4×4 vehicles.
  • Boating Experience.

Ability to:

  • To communicate with individuals and groups clearly and effectively within and outside the organization including management biologists, biologists from other agencies and tribes, agency technicians, and interested constituents. Including previous experience interviewing anglers and designing creel survey protocols.
  • Collaborates with senior staff to identify data gaps and collect baseline data that contributes to the development of meaningful biological information and management recommendations.
  • Ability to independently develop, implement and complete fisheries research including experimental design.
  • Ability to independently organize, analyze and interpret data.
  • Ability to develop meaningful biological information and management recommendations from collected data.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals, and objectives on time.
