DESCRIPTION

The Sustainable Seafood Project Manager is responsible for design and implementation of sponsored research, education and outreach projects as part of CMBC’s collaborations with industry and philanthropic partners. Develops, coordinates and executes research projects on seafood supply chains; drafting science-informed recommendations and strategies for sustainable seafood initiatives; publishing in peer-reviewed journals; building and maintaining relationships with fishing communities, non-profits, and others; conducting education and outreach programs about sustainable seafood at CMBC and with partners.

The position will help CMBC expand its role as a reliable information source on sustainable seafood by extending and growing CMBC’s new and continuing research and programs in collaboration with both internal and external partners, including academics, industry, and non-profits.

The Project Manager applies their extensive understanding of sustainable seafood and related adaptation strategies at various scales. Aligned with CMBC’s interdisciplinary approach, the Project Manager will work with and draw from multiple perspectives, including: fisheries management, social science, business, supply chains, food security, environmental justice, and marine conservation.

  • Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated academic background and experience in selected area of research preferred.

  • Strong ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytical skills. Ability to understand and synthesize diverse ideas, perspectives, data and approaches to address complex problems. With a thorough assessment of challenges and opportunities, develops strategic approaches to address challenges and aligns partners and resources for collaborative design and implementation.

  • Demonstrated experience with different research methodologies. Thorough knowledge and experience with quantitative and qualitative research design; scientific research concepts and terminology.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to present, speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.

  • Experience in public speaking, providing technical and project presentations to diverse audiences in a range of settings, including but not limited to: stakeholder and public meetings, academic faculty and staff meetings, local, state, national and international meetings, conferences and symposia.

  • Solid ability to write strategic documents, program and project marketing material tailored to specific audiences. Experience writing compelling stories about seafood, fishermen, and/or the journey of seafood from ocean to plate. Ability to compellingly communicate information and data visually as well as in writing.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results. Experience leading diverse stakeholder and scientist groups and networks to develop common objectives and plans. Ability to problem solve in diverse group settings, develop and implement plans for adjustments in project or program scope.

  • Minimum of four (4) years working in the area of sustainable seafood (e.g. fisheries management, supply chain, fisheries/seafood research, seafood sourcing, etc.). Familiarity with supply chains, consumer preferences, global markets, fisheries management, and seafood sourcing.

  • Experience working with multinational seafood distributors.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers and managers.

  • Experience collaborating with non-profit organizations.

  • Demonstrated experience conducting education workshops or programs.

  • Sound understanding of the role of research in a major research university and its links with campus, national and international communities and industry.

  • Proficient in the use of computers for: word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.

  • Solid fundraising experience.
