NATURAL RESOURCE WORKER 2 (NRW2) 


SHERMAN CREEK WILDLIFE AREA 


WDFW Wildlife Program – Lands Division 
Kettle Falls, Washington
Anticipated Season: 5 Months 
May 1st – September 30th

Picture yourself performing land management and recreational site management activities/maintenance on the Sherman Creek, LeClerc Creek & Rustlers Gulch Wildlife Areas.

Strong candidates will have applied experience in habitat management, forestry, farming, weed control and equipment maintenance work.

Our ideal candidates will have a strong work ethic, the ability to follow written and verbal directions and can work independently in remote locations.

Duties

Our Natural Resource Worker 2, 

  • Performs general wildlife area infrastructure and habitat restoration maintenance tasks.
  • Maintains/repairs the headquarters facility, compost facility, irrigation system, equipment, fences, roads, trailheads, trails, signs, and gates.
  • Posts signs for public information and recreational use.
  • Safely operates ATVs, tractors, mowers, chainsaws, and basic power and hand tools.
  • Performs regular vehicle maintenance, services, and minor vehicle repairs.
  • Fabricates parts using arc welders and cutting torches.
  • Assists with the implementation of habitat restoration projects including forest thinning and prescribed burning.
  • Conducts weed control activities and maintains the application equipment.
  • Uses backpack sprayers to apply herbicide, as well as mechanical means to remove weeds.
  • Uses Integrated Pest Management (IPM) techniques to recommend and assist with proper weed control activities.
  • Reads/understands herbicide labels and mixes – uses and stores herbicides properly.
  • Interacts with hunters and fishermen and other recreational users about the wildlife areas, wildlife issues or sightings.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    1. Work is mainly performed in the shop facility at Sherman Creek Wildlife Area headquarters, or in the field on any of the wildlife area properties.
    2. Field work includes working during all weather conditions, on hilly, slippery, muddy terrains, and on steep banks in mostly forested habitats in North Eastern Washington.
    3. Work also includes lifting, walking, stooping, bending, carrying up to 45 pounds and working independently in the field or shop with tools and equipment.
  • Schedule:
    1. Typically, Monday – Thursday – 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
    2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
  • Travel Requirements:
    1. Day trips from Sherman Creek Wildlife Area to other wildlife area units are common – round trip travel of 100 + miles per day.
    2. Wildlife area units are located in Ferry, Stevens, and Pend Oreille Counties.
    3. Rare overnight stays may be necessary for agency training opportunities.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    1. Variety of vehicles, trailers, tractors, farming implements, mowers, trimmers, ATVs, hand and power tools, welders, cutting torches, fire-fighting equipment, and others.
  • Customer Interactions:
    1. Frequent interaction with the general public and other stakeholders including hunters, hikers, schoolchildren, neighboring landowners, staff of other governmental agencies, and others.
    2. Occasional tense interactions with individuals such as poachers, squatters, and those operating vehicles where prohibited.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or GED AND Three (3) months of natural resource related labor experience.

          OR

  • One (1) year as a Natural Resource Worker 1.

AND 

  • Ability to interact successfully with members of the public and government representatives.

Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license and at least two years of driving experience.
  • Pesticide Applicator License (Public Operator with agricultural, turf & ornamental, and right-of-way weed categories), or the ability to acquire one within the first month of obtaining the position.
  • First Aid certification or the ability to acquire within the first 3 months of obtaining the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • ATV operator training.
  • Chainsaw operator training.
  • Qualified fire fighter.
