Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

These positions are with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Conservation Program in the Wildlife Division and are located in Central Point, Klamath Falls, and Lakeview. Central Point is located in southern Oregon, approximately 35 miles from the Oregon/California border or 267 miles south of Portland, OR along I-5. The city of Klamath Falls is located in southern Oregon near the Oregon/California border. Portland, Oregon is located 280 miles north of Klamath Falls. The city of Lakeview is approximately 92 miles east of Klamath Falls near the Oregon/California border or 350 miles SE of Portland, OR.

The goal of this recruitment is to fill the positions at the Fish & Wildlife Technician (FWT) level. However, we encourage candidates to apply for the Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry level ($2,638/mo.), as the department may consider under-filling the positions.

All positions will start on April 26, 2021. The position in Central Point will end on September 24, 2021 and the positions in Klamath Falls and Lakeview will end around September 16, 2021 (Note: These are estimated dates. Length of season may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).

Help keep Oregon safe from aquatic invasive species! Inspect watercrafts at key locations located around the state.

What you will do:

• Inspect watercrafts entering Oregon at designated locations throughout the state for quagga and zebra mussels and other aquatic invasive species. Follow established protocols for inspection and decontamination of affected watercrafts.

• Participate in outreach and education efforts to inform the general public about the impacts of aquatic invasive species on Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats. Disseminate information about aquatic invasive species and proper ways to clean or decontaminate watercraft at various public venues.

• Submit weekly summaries of watercraft inspections to the Invasive Species, Wildlife Integrity Supervisor. Record inspection data onto paper forms or tablet. Enter inspection forms into an online database.

• Occasionally coordinate with Oregon State Police, Oregon State Marine Board, county law enforcement, and other department staff to isolate any watercraft contaminated with quagga or zebra mussels or other aquatic invasive species.

Working Conditions
• Requires working in inclement weather.

• Requires great attention to detail when inspecting and decontaminating watercrafts.

• Requires use of a computer.

• This position requires working weekends and holidays.

• Must be persuasive and diplomatic when dealing with the general public and sometimes upset individuals.

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications

Fish & Wildlife Technician Option:

• An Associate’s degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture, Aquarium Science, Wildlife Technology or Agriculture; OR

• Eighteen months of experience in fisheries, fish culture, fish screens, care of livestock, agricultural research and experimentation, monitoring game or wildlife, or farming.

A higher level degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science, or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate’s degree.

Fish & Wildlife Technician Entry Option – Underfill:

• Minimum qualifications are not established for this classification, there are no minimum qualifications. Previous related experience is desirable.

Requested Skills:
• Experience performing watercraft inspections
• Experience participating in outreach and education efforts to inform the general public about the impacts of aquatic invasive species on Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats
• Ability to identify fish, mussels and aquatic plants
• A working knowledge of aquatic invasive species
• Performing minor maintenance on equipment
• Using a computer database to enter data
