If you are passionate about protecting, conserving and restoring ecosystems necessary for the long-term sustainability of fish and wildlife populations in Washington State, then we have an opportunity for you!  

The Engineering Aide 2 contributes to conservation, protection and restoration of healthy aquatic and riparian ecosystems.

This is an opportunity to perform skilled sub-professional engineering tasks and develop engineering documents in the field and at the office.

Picture yourself assisting engineers in the design of projects by completing CAD drawings and details from design sketches and existing drawings.

Duties

KEY DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: 

Drafting

Tasks include: 

  • Prepares original drawings utilizing CAD programs.
  • Prepares architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural drawings.
  • Details and plans from old drawings, and mostly complete sketches, as assigned.
  • Computes yardages and other quantities subject to check.
  • Drafts rudimentary and finished maps including conversion of survey and GIS files to CAD
  • Plots graphs, profiles, and other statistical, mathematical or engineering-type graphic illustrations
  • Revises construction plans with “as built” corrections.

Survey

Tasks include: 

  • Obtains data for project control and prepares calculations for field staking of coordinates for construction layout and control.
  • Assist with post processing of survey data for use in CAD or GIS
  • Completes field research, assists in information collection, inspects, and measures existing structures for accurate drafting later and measures stream flows.
  • Occasionally works with Survey crew in the field collecting data for projects.

Architectural, Civil, Mechanical, Structural, and Hydraulic Design

Tasks include: 

Under the direct supervision:

  • Prepares minor calculations and basic partial designs for review and use in drafting above.
  • Computes minor quantities of areas and volumes in complex shapes.
  • Prepares minor water velocity, head loss, and weir height calculations for pump, weir, dam, screen, and trash rack, ditch etc. requirements for use in drafting the above projects.

Office Duties

Tasks include: 

  • Solicits bid for materials and tools for various minor projects.
  • Writes technical specifications in the CSI format with correct spelling and punctuation.
  • Orders drafting and technical materials for the office.
  • Review Request for Information (RFI) and project submittals as requested by Project Managers.

Miscellaneous

Tasks include: 

  • Participates in meetings, in-service training, workshops, etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work Setting, including hazards:   

  • Duties are performed in an office setting, and on construction sites (Hatcheries, Offices, Accesses, and Wildlife areas). Tasks will involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must have the ability to walk on uneven terrain and steep slopes for extended periods of time; and tolerate inclement/adverse weather conditions.
  • Must have the ability to climb ladders, work from boats and work from elevated locations.

Schedule:   

  • This position normally works Monday-Friday but may be required to work more than 40 hours per week or on weekends.

Travel Requirements: 

  • Travel is required

 Tools and Equipment:  

  • Computer hardware and software; multi-line telephones; hand tools and survey equipment.

Customer Interactions:

  • Will be working primarily with Lead Engineers, Engineering Aides, Surveyors, and Inspectors.   

 Certifications/Licenses: 

  • Valid Driver’s License.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED

AND  

  • Two (2) years experience in computer aided drafting, surveying, engineering design or construction inspection.

          OR 

  • College-level course work with major emphasis in engineering may be substituted, year for year, for the required experience.

Job Knowledge and Experience:

  • Effective communication skills including verbal, written and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team-based environment.
  • Strong multi-tasking and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, collaborative, and analytical skills with a customer focus; must be able to foster and maintain sound working relationships.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft computer software (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A minimum of 50 credit hours of CAD instruction in architectural, mechanical, and civil drafting or work experience equivalent to 15 hours per credit.
  • Familiarity with GIS and LiDAR for use in CAD and basic map making.
