POSITION

A Temporary Hourly (9-month) Project Archaeologist position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) to provide support for the Cultural Resource Management Program for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District Office. This position is located in Portland, Oregon.

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide support at up to 25 Operating Project Locations on the Columbia and Willamette River Basins, The Rogue River Basin and Coastal Channels and Harbors, located in the states of Oregon and Washington.
  • Conduct archeological survey, evaluation, and monitoring as needed. Supervise, direct and manage field support and technicians for the survey and evaluation activities. This includes project area survey, documented with field notes and photographs, preparation of reports that include recommendations to the District Archeologist regarding National Register Eligibility, monitoring of existing sites, and preparation of appropriate State Historic Preservation Office site forms.
  • Provide small-scale identification surveys of archaeological and architectural resources and archaeological site evaluations for National Register of Historic Places eligibility. The determinations will be for sites, buildings or structures that may be affected by projects identified during the environmental impact review process.
  • Support all aspects of integrated cultural resources management in compliance with Federal preservation law governing the protection and preservation of historic properties with the least impact on the Corps’ mission. The candidate shall capture location information regarding area inventories, shovel test pits, and other relevant data on government provided equipment.
  • Prepare and provide written reports, site form documentation and updates and other correspondence as requested throughout the period of performance. Reporting will include: providing technical input for the preparation of Section 110 compliance documents, site forms, information papers, monitoring reports, National Register 10-900 nomination forms, and management plans. Cultural resource reports will meet SHPO standards.
  • Investigate, report, and consult on known sites, late discoveries and inadvertent finds, and review artifact curation and monitoring as well as visit sites and record data on the condition of cultural sites.

  • Maintain electronic and paper records and files, and provide input to maintain Geographic Information System (GIS) data related to cultural resources. The candidate shall utilize, maintain existing and create new GIS layer data in ArcGIS (and update data as it becomes available) to prepare project maps to reflect cultural resources operations

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS

The successful candidate must be able to walk over uneven terrain and work in inclement weather.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field with archaeology or anthropology emphasis and five years of post-graduation professional experience are required.
  • Experience with GPS/GIS and Access database is required. Demonstrated knowledge of Pacific Northwest U.S. prehistory and history, the ability to conduct archaeological site analysis, survey and data recovery, report preparation, and presentation is necessary.
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a valid driver’s license by employment start date.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field with archaeology or anthropology emphasis and two years of post-graduation professional experience are preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are helpful.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the application of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and expertise in the application of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is desired.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the Archeological Resources Protection Act (ARPA) and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) is helpful.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the nomination process for the National Register of Historic Places and of the application of the criteria for eligibility is beneficial.
  • Experience with cultural resources management on Department of Defense lands is desired.

PAY RATE

Pay rate is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  The pay rate is $30.00 per hour.
