This is an opportunity to provide assistance and support the statewide trust water monitoring program and associated stream flow augmentation efforts.

Picture yourself, assessing the biological and ecological benefits of instream flow restoration for anadromous (fish born in freshwater who spend most of their lives in saltwater) and resident salmonid populations.

With your experience, you will collect vital assessment information for pre-approval, review, and effectiveness of various stream flow enhancement projects and transactions.

Our Scientific Technician 2, 

• Monitors stream flow and collects water chemistry data related to stream flow augmentation projects.
• Assists the Eastern Washington Water Team with monitoring trust water rights acquired within the state’s sixteen critical basins, focusing mainly on Columbia River tributaries.
• Installs, monitors, and operates staff gages and pressure transducers.
• Assists Water Team staff with various instream flow studies.
• Enters data collected during the sampling periods into the Water Team’s monitoring database.
• Provides assistance to the Water Team with other stream flow monitoring needs.
• Conducts field habitat measurements in streams throughout the state.
• Interprets, understands, and accurately follows work procedures.
• Carefully and accurately observes and records the condition and quality of salmonid habitats.
• Uses various fish sampling methods, to include but not limited to electrofishing, seine net, and snorkel surveys.

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

• Work Setting, including hazards: 
  1. 95% of the work performed is fieldwork, which includes working outside in inclement weather, exposure to insect bites/stings and safely operating a motor vehicle on developed and undeveloped roads.
  2. Remoteness of work sites requires walking several miles daily on uneven terrain, frequently wading in rivers and streams potentially during high flows, carrying 40+ lbs. of equipment with frequent bending, stooping, and climbing over rocks/slopes.
• Schedule:
  1. Typically, Monday – Friday – 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
  2. Workload demands may require work outside the assigned work hours and adjustment of work schedules.
• Travel Requirements: 
  1. Travel occurs daily, in state vehicles in order to get to the job sites.
  2. Must be willing and able to travel overnight for extended periods of time – including, but not limited to camping in remote wilderness areas.
• Tools and Equipment: 
  1. Desktop Computers, GIS, GPS, cameras, inflatable boats, iPad’s, portable flow meters, and water chemistry equipment.
• Customer Interactions: 
  1. Frequent contact with clients and some contact with the public while conducting fieldwork.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Please Note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Certifications/Licenses: 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of freshwater habitat requirements for anadromous and resident salmonids, and associated life histories.
• Attention to detail in collecting and compiling information into reports and forms.
• Proficiency in the use of Arc GIS, Excel, Access, and Microsoft Word.

Ability to: 

• Create maps in GIS to display information collected in the field.
• Review and assess conditions which inhibit natural salmonid production.
• Carefully and accurately observe and record the condition and quality of salmonid habitat.
• Work effectively as part of a team, physically helping others perform tasks in the field.
• Identify juvenile and adult salmonids.
• Closely follow standard protocols and perform work under moderate to low supervision.
