Summary of Duties

The Solid Waste Division of Thurston County Public Works is seeking a seasonal Building & Grounds Maintenance Specialist to work five days per week, Monday through Friday, for a period of approximately six (6) months.

This employee will provide semi-skilled and skilled labor at the County’s Waste and Recovery Center, the Closed-Loop Garden, and the Off-Leash Dog Park in Lacey, Washington, as well as the two drop-box facilities in Rochester and Rainier, Washington. Duties may include any or all of the following: landscaping, planting, mowing, trimming, weeding, culvert cleaning and repair, and irrigation system installation and repair; operating hand tools, power tools, light equipment, commercial mower, vehicles, tractor, backhoe, and fork lift; and light construction and building maintenance to include carpentry and painting.

This job requires the ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, reach overhead, and lift up to 75 pounds. This position will work primarily outside during all weather conditions and may be exposed to hot and cold temperatures, dust, vegetation, insects, noise, and physical hazards from working around equipment and moving traffic. Wearing long pants, safety shoes or boots, safety vest, and other personal protective equipment is required.

Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • Current and valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time, reach overhead, and lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work with exposure to all weather conditions, dust, vegetation, insects, noise, heavy and light equipment, and traffic, and;
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with co-workers and the public, take oral and written direction, adapt to changing work conditions/tasks, and work independently and in groups.
Desired Skills
  • Experience and ability to operate heavy equipment such as a backhoe and fork lift is highly desirable.
  • Experience in landscape installation and maintenance and ability to use hand tools, a commercial mower, back-pack blower, trimmer, chain saw, and tractor is highly desirable.
  • Experience with light construction and/or building maintenance to include painting and ability to use construction hand tools and power tools is highly desirable.
