The Nisqually Land Trust is a nationally accredited, 32-year-old nonprofit corporation with a reputation for high-quality conservation in one of the most beautiful watersheds in the country. Currently, we protect over 7,700 acres of wildlife habitat between Mount Rainier National Park and the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, where we have our office, on Puget Sound near Olympia. Our mission is to acquire and manage critical lands to permanently benefit the water, wildlife, and people of the Nisqually River Watershed.

Duties: In this role, you will work collaboratively with Land Trust staff, volunteers, and partners to plan, coordinate, and implement land stewardship, habitat maintenance, and habitat restoration activities.

  • Some of what you’ll enjoy doing:
  • monitoring and documenting site conditions on Land Trust owned lands and conservation easements;
  • documenting and resolving land stewardship issues;
  • developing and implementing management plans;
  • planning and implementing property management and habitat restoration projects, including: forest road maintenance, maintenance of boundary signs, fences, gates, and structures, demolition of unnecessary structures, identifying and controlling invasive weeds, planting, maintaining, and monitoring native trees and shrubs, and forest stand management;
  • managing contracts for land management activities;
  • maintaining positive relationships with Land Trust neighbors;
  • fundraising and grant management for land stewardship activities;
  • leading and providing guidance for stewardship volunteer events and activities;
  • participating in public events and partner events on Land Trust properties;
  • stewardship recordkeeping; and
  • supervising the Stewardship Assistant.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences (forestry, environmental studies, ecology, or related field).
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a land stewardship position. Experience with nonprofit land stewardship and forest habitat restoration preferred.
  • Familiar with western Washington native plants, invasive weeds, and threatened and endangered species.
  • Excellent record-keeping, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs; GPS and orienteering; and ArcGIS.
  • Experience with land management software; experience with Landscape preferred.
  • Enthusiastic about working with volunteers.
  • Able to engage with new people easily, communicate in a positive, professional manner, and work well in a team environment.
  • Available to work some non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds and to work independently under physically demanding conditions, including rough terrain and a variety of weather conditions.
  • Experience operating and maintaining hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Experience with herbicide use for noxious weed control.
  • Experience with basic vehicle and building maintenance.
  • Experience with rafts and canoes.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and vehicle insurance.
  • Land Steward will be required to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certification and Washington Herbicide Applicator License
