JOB SUMMARY
The position will manage the Tribes’ Willamette properties and coordinate with the Willamette Wildlife Mitigation program (WWMP) as a member of the Technical Review Team (TRT). The Biologist will seek out potential properties for the Tribes to acquire through the program. This position will partner with various organizations and programs in the Willamette Basin to promote Tribal interests and funding for conservation efforts. Duty Station will be the Oregon City office.
Responsibilities:
The Wildlife Biologist II position will manage the Tribes’ three properties in the Willamette watershed: Red Hills, Little Sweden and Austin Hot Springs. This work will involve finalizing management plans, development of forest management plans, and subsequent implementation of management activities for these properties. This work includes forestry actions (contracting timber sales), visitor management (signs, access permits), weed control activities (spray contracts, mapping, in-house management), coordination with law enforcement regarding trespass activities, grant writing, developing restoration actions, and various resource monitoring work.
The position will participate in the TRT roles and other activities of the WWMP, including touring projects, developing tribal projects, and scoring projects. Project development consists of finding properties with intact wildlife habitats and assorted realty due diligence actions for property acquisition, including contracting appraisals and surveys, preparing conservation easement language for habitat values, and coordinating acquisition calls with partners and tribal staff.
The position will also be required to raise funding for project work on properties and the position through various partnerships, grant opportunities, and other programs where possible.
Supervisory Duties:
There are no staff or subordinates for this position, but the position will supervise all contractors funded through the program.
Successful Performance Requirements:
The Wildlife Biologist will work independently in developing and administering the project, maintain professional working relationships with other staff, agencies, and organizations, communicate effectively to staff and BNR managers, possess strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate and up to date records, understand various wildlife habitats of the Willamette valley, and be able to present projects to diverse groups of people in formal and informal settings.
QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience:
A Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife, fisheries, botany, natural resources, or related area is required. Three years of professional experience in wildlife management, land management, or similar field.
Knowledge & Skills sought:
- Knowledge wildlife habitat in the Willamette River watershed and those sensitive, threatened and endangered species that need them
- Skill at working independently, with little supervision to develop and run a program while professionally representing the Tribes
- Skill in mapping habitat cover types
- Knowledge and skills in GIS and map making
- Database management and development skills
- Knowledge of budgeting, purchasing, and contracting procedures
- Developing and implementing land management plans
- Able to use office applications and software for reports, grants, and contracts
- Independent self-starter that can work with little support or supervision to successfully develop and run a program out of a satellite office.
- Knowledge of land acquisition, realty procedures, and conservation easements desirable
Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent
- Ability to traverse rough and steep terrain in variable weather carrying field gear and collection equipment.
- Ability to lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Requires a valid Oregon driver’s license and insurance.
Compensation:
Starting salary range of $43,000 to $46,696, DOE; with grade range up to $57,904. The Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon offer insurance and 401k package.
