Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located at Lookingglass Hatchery in Elgin, OR.

Put your maintenance and construction experience to use as the next Facility Operations Specialist at our Lookingglass Hatchery located in Elgin.

Initial interviews are anticipated to be held via phone, video or virtual interview due to the current situation related to COVID-19 (Coronavirus).

What you will do:

Provide support to the hatchery production team through planning, directing, monitoring, and performing all aspects of equipment and facilities maintenance, safety training, specifying, acquiring bids, and recommending purchasing of goods and services. The major roles and responsibilities of this position are to:

• Participate with the manager to plan and prepare short term and long-term goals to meet the electrical, mechanical, and structural maintenance of facilities, vehicles, buildings, and grounds.

• Locate, identify, and repair electrical and mechanical equipment, buildings, vehicles, and plumbing systems. Contact outside vendors for repair help and equipment parts if needed, and solicit bids if necessary. Research and recommend purchase of new and replacement equipment. Perform preventative maintenance and design and fabricate specialized parts and equipment. Train hatchery personnel in the operation of power equipment and tools, lift trucks, tractors, and safety equipment. Work with the manager to assign work to hatchery personnel where appropriate and reviews work with manager.

• Plan, direct, and perform installation, replacement, and modification of equipment and facilities. Keep blueprints, operation manuals, and service records in an orderly filing system.

Working Conditions:

• The employee in this position is required to live on station as a condition of employment and work on an on-call basis as assigned and be available to respond to emergency situations.

• Must perform strenuous activities, work in cramped areas. Work in inclement weather, including in cold water and extreme heat. Work in close proximity to exposed live electrical circuits; exposed to chemicals and other potentially harmful substances. Can be subjected to dust irritants and loud noises.

• Requires operating heavy equipment and machinery, fork lifts, backhoes, large tractors, snow plows, pull trailers and other industrial equipment.

• This position requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, and does not exceed forty (40) hours in a workweek. Work exceeding (40) hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

• A Bachelor’s degree in building construction, industrial engineering or related field AND one year of experience planning, scheduling, or coordinating facility system maintenance and construction projects; OR

• Four years of experience planning, scheduling or coordination facility system maintenance or construction projects.

Requested Skills:

•Inspecting buildings and fixtures, minor building maintenance, painting, servicing and repairing equipment and tools, fabrication, vehicle maintenance and repairs, and alarm systems;

• Operating and maintaining pumps, motorized equipment, hatchery equipment;

• Welding, engine, and/or diesel and gasoline mechanical certifications;
• Performing vehicle maintenance and repair;

• Performing maintenance related to fish culture such as repair of fish culture tools, pumps, fish pumps, generators for back-up power, crowders, and fabricating items for fish technicians;

• Using an arc welder, wire feed welder, and cutting torches, and fabrication;

• Acting as safety officer or leading a safety training program

• Training others in the operation of equipment.
