Job Description:

This position is currently being offered as either a Limited Duration appointment for anyone to apply OR as a statewide Job Rotation to all permanent, current State of Oregon employees (this includes regular status and limited duration employees who have completed trial service).  State of Oregon job rotations require employer approval. Position located at the North Cascade District-Santiam Unit in Marion County.

What will you do?  

As Forest Officer/Equipment Operator you will provide for skilled and safe operation of heavy equipment owned and operated by the district including transports (semi-tractor/trailer), dozers, excavators, water tenders, engines, and other miscellaneous equipment. You will administrate and enforce Oregon’s fire prevention laws and operate heavy equipment in response to wildland fire emergency incidents, and in non-emergency land management activities within the district. You will serve as overhead on wildfire incident including detection, pre-suppression, prevention, and suppression. You will be involved with routine building/ground maintenance, and equipment/vehicle maintenance.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Candidates whose demonstrate skills, abilities and/or experience in the following:

  • Four years in wildland fire suppression (one 3-6 month season is equivalent to 1 year of experience).

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and one year of wildland fire suppression (one 3-6 month season is equivalent to 1 year of experience).

OR

  • Two years in wildland fire suppression and an Associate’s degree in forestry or closely related natural resource field (one 3-6 month season is equivalent to 1 year of experience).

  • Wildland Fire Investigation

  • Operating Wildland Fire Engines.

  • Operating manual or split-shift transmissions

  • Operate heavy equipment such as transports (semi-tractor/trailer), dozers, excavators, water tenders and other miscellaneous equipment.

  • Maintain and repair equipment and machinery.

  • Conducting resource readiness of equipment and personnel.

  • Using maps, compasses and GPS.

  • Using hand tools and operating motorized equipment commonly used for wildland fire.

  • Enforcing forestry laws, rules and regulations to the public.

  • Performing in high stress, fast paced emergency situations.

  • Maintaining situational awareness at all times.

  • Strong leadership and mentoring skills with the ability to direct a crew of diverse individuals.

  • Communicating with both internal and external customers including cooperators, landowners, public and fire crews.

  • Effective conflict resolution.

  • Strong decision making capabilities.

  • Working collaboratively as a member of a team.

  • Providing training to others.

  • Working independently with general direction and minimal supervision.

  • Completing accurate reports in a timely manner with strong attention to detail.

  • Experience with providing oversight in facilities and grounds maintenance projects.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office or computer applications creating databases and spreadsheets.

  • Understanding and implementing safe work practices.

  • Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Developing specific goals and plans to prioritize, organize, and accomplish duties.

  • Maintaining an adequate level of fitness to perform assigned duties.

  • Knowledge in smoke management and/or prescribed slash burning.

  • Serve in a leadership role on the fireline such as a Division Supervisor, Taskforce Leader, or Type 5, 4, or 3 Incident Commander.

  • Preference may be given to candidates who have current fire qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of service, workforce diversity, equity and inclusion, team environment, and strong internal communication and alignment.

Requirement for Position

  • Successful applicants must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level as a condition of hire. Please click on this link for information about the Work Capacity Test.

  • Must be able to report to assigned duty station within 30 minutes after hours. The duty station for the Santiam Unit will be located either in Salem or a guard station within the Lyons area.

  • This position include duties that require the possession of a Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and tank endorsements. Pursuant to the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and regulations established by the Federal Highway Administration, you will be required to pass a controlled substance test as a condition of employment. If you successfully pass this test and are hired, you will also be subject to random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up alcohol/controlled substance testing.
