Help the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife fulfill its mission: To protect and enhance Oregon’s fish and wildlife and their habitats for use and enjoyment by present and future generations.

Location:  Based out of Clackamas, Oregon. Work to be conducted primarily on the lower Columbia River downstream of Bonneville Dam and lower Willamette River downstream of Willamette Falls.

Anticipated Duration:  As soon as possible to mid June, 2021 (two positions)

Job Description: What you will do:  The primary purpose of these positions are to assist the Marine Mammal Program staff in the management of California and Steller sea lions primarily at Bonneville Dam (Columbia River at Cascade Locks, OR) and Willamette Falls (Willamette River at Oregon City, OR) in order to reduce predation on Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed salmonid stocks and other fish species of concern (e.g., white sturgeon, Pacific lamprey).  Work includes sea lion observation, trapping, handling and sampling; data collection, data processing, manual labor and equipment maintenance; as well as a variety of other miscellaneous tasks.

These positions require a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day including most weekends and some night work. These positions may be physically demanding.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for these positions; however we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g., small boat maintenance/operation, handling, managing, and/or working with pinnipeds, other marine mammals or large wildlife; wildlife or animal necropsies and data collection; and demonstrating a background in ecology or wildlife science and management, and positive public communication on ecological topics) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with this background.

These positions require a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible.
