The Position
The Portland Water Bureau is seeking an applicant with a botanical background to assist in the collection of field data and invasive plant control!

The position is a Community Services Aide II.   The Botanical CSA (Part-Time Seasonal) would start as early as March 1.   The botanical CSA would work approximately 2-3 days per week (16-30 hours per week).   The botanical CSA will report to work at Sandy River Station, located near the confluence of the Bull Run and Sandy rivers in Sandy (adjacent to Dodge Park).  Their work would focus on invasive plant surveys and control, vegetation restoration efforts, GIS data entry, and other assigned duties.

The CSA will work under the direction of Water Bureau staff but at times will do field work both on their own and in a small team.   The CSA may be cross-trained to perform other biological duties as assigned by the Water Bureau.

Candidates may be required to work during inclement weather conditions and must have the physical ability to walk over uneven or steep terrain.

Type of appointment – Part-time, up to 1400 hours/year
Reporting Location –Sandy River Station
Schedule – 16-30 hours per week, 2-3 days per week
Pay range  – $13.23 -$22.00

The anticipated pay rate for the successful applicant is based on the years of school completed, post high school, in environmental sciences.

This recruitment is for a seasonal employee.   Seasonal employees may work up to a maximum of 1,400 hours per calendar year, but the actual hours will depend on the duties assigned.  They may receive holiday and sick leave depending on their work schedule and hours worked.  They are not eligible for retirement or health benefits.

Work Location

Currently, many positions with the City of Portland are being performed remotely due to COVID-19. In the future, current positions classified as “full-time remote” could: 1) remain full-time remote, 2) become a remote/onsite mix, or 3) revert to full-time at a city work location.

To Qualify
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
  1. Ability & experience to demonstrate data recording and record keeping
  2. Ability to identify native and invasive plants
  3. Ability & experience in invasive plant removal
  4. Ability to assist with vegetation restoration efforts
  5. Ability to use devices with GIS/GPS tracking to locate plant populations

Applicant must also possess:

  • A valid State Driver’s License and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment.
  •  A valid herbicide applicators license through the Oregon Department of Agriculture
