Job Description:

What will you do?  

As a Stewardship Forester you will administer the Oregon Forest Practices Act laws and rules and provide forestry assistance programs to landowners within an assigned geographic area. Administration includes assisting landowners to achieve their land management objectives and provide for the societal values of the citizens of this state by offering forestry and fire prevention educational and technical assistance that encourages long term investments in forest management activities that are consistent with sound management of soil, air, water, fish and wildlife resources. This includes providing professional forestry advice to landowners and operators concerning forest management, fire prevention and administration of the Forest Practices Act and fire prevention laws.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Candidates whose demonstrate skills, abilities and/or experience in the following:

  • Five years of experience in forestry or related natural resource field.

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or related natural resource field and two years of forestry or related natural resource experience. Note: A Master’s degree in forestry or related natural resource field will count towards one year of the required experience.

  • Working knowledge of forest management technology and recommended best management practices.

  • College-level training in a natural resource management discipline or enough work experience to provide equivalent knowledge.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster a culture of service, workforce diversity, equity and inclusion, team environment, and strong internal communication and alignment.

  • Proven experience as an excellent communicator who is honest, fair and inclusive among employees, partners and stakeholders.

  • Excellent verbal and written skills including working with operators, landowners, and the general public in communicating technical information and prescriptive standards.

  • Ability to work with and communicate with people who may have opposing views relating to the Forest Practice Rules and natural resource management and protection.

  • Experience providing education and outreach to a variety of users such as landowners, operators, small woodland owners, and other agencies in classroom/workshop and/or field tour settings etc.

  • Experience writing forest management plans or treatment prescriptions.

  • Knowledge of the program statutes, rules, guidelines and policies.

  • Working knowledge of field technology (GPS, tablets) in a forestry setting.

  • Working knowledge of GIS applications and ability to manipulate data.

  • Working knowledge of fire management and fire suppression techniques.

  • Ability to work in a team setting.

  • Ability to adjust to shifting priorities and emerging issues.
