Metro Parks Tacoma (MPT) is a CAPRA-accredited and AZA-accredited, independent park district that leads efforts to build a healthy, sustainable community.  Metro Parks Tacoma is located in Tacoma, Washington. The system is comprised of many different park facilities that offer residents a variety of recreational opportunities. POSITION INFORMATION

Under the direction of the Regional Parks & Attractions Deputy Director; develop, administer and supervise profitable Point Defiance Marina Complex enterprise operations, including the effective and proper maintenance of all Marina facilities which includes operation of the boat launch facility, bait and tackle shop operations and locker tenant storage;  plan and deliver programs, events and education activities,  perform administrative work in planning and direction of the Marina Enterprise Fund; assure that business goals and objectives are accomplished through direct management and supervision of personnel and through compliance with rules and regulations, also responsible for coordination of locker tenant lease agreements and all rental operations.

Essential Duties

  • Supervise and oversee the Point Defiance Marina Complex, including the bait and tackle shop, programs, education and outreach program, partnerships and collaborations, public fishing piers and open space, dry storage, leases as appropriate and facility, fueling and public boat launch.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned union and non-union staff; provide a culture which encourages employee development and practices effective leadership by empowering staff to make their own decisions; interview, select and schedule all employees, recommend transfers, reassignment, termination and disciplinary actions; plan, coordinate and arrange for appropriate employee training programs to provide for opportunity for advancement and to acquire necessary skills.
  • Develop and implement profitable enterprise fund methods related to retail operations, procedures and guidelines, including receipt analysis, inventory methods, merchandise security, display and pricing methods; assure the proper collection, processing, security and deposit of daily cash receipts; distribute cash drawers and change to revenue centers; monitor the change fund; establish procedures for stock management, control and security; ensure cash-point procedures are maintained according to established Metro Parks Tacoma procedures; make recommendations to staff for improved cash processing procedures as necessary.
  • Develop and manage consistent agreements and business operations for boathouse tenants.  Proactively manager tenant relationships and regular communication.
  • Assess community needs and develop and deliver a variety of recreational and educational boating, fishing, sailing and other water based activities, programs and events aligning with district and PDMC goals, as well as cost recovery and other programmatic benchmarks and performance tracking.  Assist with education activities as needed; provide direct input and guide direction into the development and distribution of promotional materials in collaboration with Marketing Manager.
  • Develop and prepare preliminary budgets for the all cost centers associated with Point Defiance Marina; analyze and review budgetary and financial data; control and authorize expenditures in accordance with established limitations.  Develop goals and objectives for the Marina Complex including creating/updating and implementing the Point Defiance Marina business plan, marketing, branding, retailing and operational goals.
  • Maintain EnviroStars Clean Marina certification in support of MPT’s environmental sustainability goals, demonstrating the commitment to preventing waste and spreading an ethic of environmental responsibility, as well as performing best business practices within the industry.
  • Supervise and coordinate stocking and profitable merchandise pricing activities; read various product catalogs; meet with and communicate with vendors and suppliers to obtain quotes and to view new product lines; attend gift and trade shows as appropriate.
  • Manage, develop and implement a sustainable maintenance program [preventative and routine] for the entire Marina Complex including supervising the PDMC’s long and short term capital improvement and replacement programs and surplus aged equipment.  Regularly inspect all Point Defiance Marina facilities to ensure facilities and grounds are adequately maintained, safe and ready for use. Aid, advise and occasionally lead project management responsibilities related to Marina assets.
  • Establish and maintain consistent communication and collaborative efforts with the various Point Defiance waterfront organizations to include Tacoma Yacht Club, Breakwater Marina, WA State Ferries (Vashon Ferry), Pierce Transit and Anthony’s Restaurant.  Develop, coordinate and oversee marketing efforts and public relations activities to encourage the Marina Complex’s visitor base.
  • Participate in special projects; participate in/on a variety of hearings, task forces, meetings, committees, and/or training sessions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to:  Bachelor’s degree in Parks Administration, Public Administration, Business or related field and a minimum of eight years of increasingly responsible experience and proven success managing and operating a profitable enterprise business division with retail management and/or business administration (or combination of education, training, and experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work). Prior Marina senior management experience highly desired.

LICENSE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Obtain a valid First Aid and CPR card within the probationary period.
