About Friends of the Owyhee:

Friends of the Owyhee was founded in 2015 and became an official not for profit organization in 2019. The mission of Friends of the Owyhee is to promote conservation advocacy, stewardship, and recreation in the Owyhee region of Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada. Our Vision is to work collaboratively with conservation and recreation groups, landowners, ranchers, tribes, sportsmen, and government agencies to help ensure the Owyhee unique ecological, cultural and recreational resources are protected for future generations to experience and enjoy. In our short time as an organization, we’ve developed many projects and programs. Our programs include citizen science, youth and adult advocacy and environmental education, and conservation policy; among many other others.

The Owyhee is a tri-state watershed in SE Oregon, SW Idaho, and N. Central Nevada. It is roughly 8 million acres in size. The watershed has about 15k people that live in the Watershed but about a million people that live on the boundaries. It has some of the darkest night skies in the lower 48 states. Is home to many rare and endemic plants. The region has about 10% of the nations wilderness study areas

Work Environment:

We are a rapidly growing conservation organization. Our culture is open-minded, collaborative, and values individual voices in the work we do as an organization. You’ll be working directly with our Executive Director, our Programs Director, and oftentimes local and regional organizations and businesses. Initially, this position can be a mix of remote work (from home) and office.

The Position:

Communication Coordinator

Wage is $2400 per month (Salary/Exempt) for 120 hours (3/4 time) plus a monthly $500 medical stipend. We will be providing a retirement option in 2021 once set up. We have guaranteed funding for 2 years with the intentions of securing more funding to make this a full-time and long term position.

Help support the executive director and program manager in promoting programs and protection work through:

Managing, Creating, and Editing Communication Content (50%),

  • Create and coordinate content to promote awareness and participation in Friends of the Owyhee (FOTO) programs and activities through online newsletter and email campaigns.
  • Develop online content and coordinate all social media, website updates, and media contacts for the organization in order to create momentum for and awareness of FOTO programs and activities. This includes developing social media content, creating press releases, and utilizing free media outlets.
  • Edit and review grants and other organizational documents.
  • Assist in planning upcoming FOTO events
  • Help manage organizational outreach and annual calendar.
  • Attend regular staff and other meetings as needed.

Web Management and Design (25%),

  • Help expand and maintain FOTO’s website.

Researching New Funding and Maintaining Sources (15%),

  • Coordinate grant and proposal preparation and reporting. Including organizing and maintaining grant and proposal timelines, drafting grant proposals and reporting.
  • Support donor stewardship and cultivation strategies, including coordination of gift acknowledgements, conducting donor prospect research and board fundraising activity.
  • Organize donor systems, files, calendars, correspondence, plans and records and report on donation activity as needed.
  • Assist with the production of all donor communications materials – both print and electronic collateral and mailings.

Managing/Organizing Contact Data and other Documents (10%)

  • Collect event photos and/or videos. Maintain media for ongoing use. Create, edit and upload photos and videos to websites and social media.
  • Track online analytics and support internal and external data reporting needs.
  • Help organize digital and physical documents.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred in Communications, Marketing, Environmental Studies or a related field preferred. Please apply if you have experience without a degree!
  • At least 6 months of work experience in marketing, communications, public relations, preferably with a nonprofit organization.
  • Able to effectively describe topics and concepts in simplified terms to a wide range of audiences, without losing the meaning or significance.
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills with the ability to learn and master new communication formats quickly.
  • Fluency in social media tools including Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, MailChimp, Nationbuilder, etc.
  • Proficiency with web-based design applications, Microsoft Office, Excel, Google Docs, Google Spreadsheet, and internet research required.
  • Graphic design/communications layout, photography and photo/video editing skills preferred.
  • Understanding of nonprofit organizations and experience with development of fundraising collateral highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of Eastern Oregon, South West Idaho, Northern Nevada culture and landscape, land management and other related fields preferred.
