Position Description

Seattle Center is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time Gardener for a 6 month opportunity.  This position is a member of a small team of professional gardeners reporting to the Landscape Supervisor; this position works with a team of gardeners in close proximity to the public, performing gardening that is impacted by events that are held indoors and outdoors across a 74-acre campus.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform skilled gardening and landscaping work in planting, cultivation, pruning and care of flowers, shrubs, trees, lawn and landscaped areas
  • Fertilize, mow, aerate, top dress and over-seed lawn areas
  • Utilize Integrated Pest Management, including pesticide applications for weed, insect and disease control
  • Operate equipment such as riding mower, aerator/seeder, small tractor, backpack blower, edger and chainsaw
  • Understand cultural needs of specific plants and implement the appropriate landscape maintenance needed for a given site
  • Work independently and as a team member and expect to be held accountable for work performance
  • Strong customer service, communication and teamwork skills while working with diverse workforce and a multicultural public clientele
  • Understand irrigation system components and functions. Monitor and adjust watering schedules based on plant needs
Qualifications

Two years’ minimum experience as a journey level landscaper or gardener. Other combinations of education, training, and/or experience that provide an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class may be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability.

The most successful candidates will have:

  • Experience and knowledge of all aspects of grounds maintenance
  • strong interest in horticulture
  • Experience working with and knowledge of Pacific Northwest plants and landscape.
  • Knowledge of irrigation systems
  • The ability to work within a diverse workforce
  • The ability to organize work and problem solve

License, Certification, and Other Requirements:

  • A Washington State Public Operator’s Pesticide License must be acquired within one year of hire
  • Possess a valid Washington State Driver License at time of application

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis
  • Willing and able to work outside in all kinds of weather
  • Ability to stand, walk or bend for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work effectively and safely in close proximity to the public
