Job Description:

In this position, you’ll be working in the best backyard imaginable with 1,800 acres of rolling hills, forest glades, gleaming streams and wildflowers, all crisscrossed with over 25 miles of trails. What you will do:

As a seasonal Park Ranger 1, you’ll be on the front lines of park safety, maintenance, and visitor services. You’ll perform:

Park Patrol, Safety, & Rule Enforcement

  • Patrol park areas to protect and preserve resources and facilities by checking for misuse, undesirable activities, and hazardous situations
  • Seek voluntary visitor compliance with park area rules and regulations; issue verbal and written warnings as necessary
  • Render emergency aid and assistance to park visitors and prepare related reports

Facility & Landscape Maintenance

  • Construct and restore hiking trails, footbridges, paths, signs, parking areas, etc.
  • Plant vegetation, mow lawns, and irrigate plants and lawns
  • Prune trees and shrubs using manual and power tools, as well as apply fertilizers and pesticides
  • Maintain irrigation systems and equipment including pumps, timers, pipes, wires and valves

Visitor Services

  • Accept and process payments for park services
  • Provide information about local attractions, park rules, and regulations to visitors
  • Train and oversee the work of seasonal employees and volunteers, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures related to park operations and cash handling

Additional Duties

  • Custodial maintenance
  • Building maintenance and construction
  • Utility system maintenance and construction
  • Resource interpretation and conservation

What we are looking for (Desired Attributes):

  • Experience performing landscape maintenance, including operating riding lawn mowers
  • Experience constructing and maintaining trails
  • Skill in front-line customer service
  • Experience with operation and maintenance of landscape and construction equipment
  • Skill in performing janitorial maintenance
  • Experience operating a park reservation system and registering campers

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of visitor services experience (e.g. rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)
  • OR​ an Associate’s degree or higher in Park and Recreation Administration, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Studies and 6 months of visitor services experience (e.g., rule enforcement; interpretation such as education and environmental awareness programs; special events and activities; etc.) AND/OR maintenance experience (e.g., construction trades, landscaping)

Special Requirements:

  • To be hired, you must have a criminal records and driving records check that meets OPRD criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
  • You must have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire and throughout employment
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification and OPRD Enforcement Officer Status after appointment
  • Forklift certification after appointment
  • ATV Safety Card after appointment
  • Chainsaw Operator Certification within 12 months of hire
